Results and Pics of Shark Tourney

I HEARD THEY PULLED IT BEHIND THE BOAT AND THEN LET OFF THE THROTTLE AND PULLED HIM IN AS THE WAKE CAME UP

Here in Savannah A gentelman pulled in a nine foot shark from the river inlet at Tybee, I think it was 2007. So it “reely”(I stole this from another post) does not matter how far out you are, but it matters if you are in the water.

If it happened the way you said, then I doubt that shark survived. Lets hook a line to you, have you fight us for a while, and when you are too tired to fight us anymore, we will cut off your oxygen supply for “5 minutes”. Would you be released alive???[:I]

Sorry, couldn’t help myself

P.S. I’m not a tree hugger. I just don’t buy RACRX’s story about the shark in the pic on the beach.

For what it’s worth I believe Racrx when he says he released the blacktip he is pictured with on the beach. I’ve tagged and released nearly a thousand sharks since 1973 and many have been released from the beach after a quick photo, so I think he should be cut a little slack.

As for the big tiger that was a great catch on 50lb tackle. The big ones fight hard. We caught a 718 pound fish once that was 11 feet T/L. I’m surprised they didn’t get a measurement; without that it is impossible to estimate the weight. Still, a hell of a catch. I tag and release nearly everything but don’t see a problem with a few sharks being taken here and there if there is a use for the meat and if the information and measurements, etc are taken for scientific use. That said I remember tournaments in the past where the winner was whoever had the most total weight in sharks, so some guy caught a jillion sharpnose. That was pretty sick.

I agree as well, Squalus. Our club has also released a good many sharks from beaches. Sharks are pretty hardy animals and they can live out of the water for hours. I’ve personally seen larger ones live after being pulled up to our beach house for half the night. We have released browns and duskies with no problems after more than 30 mins. and these guys laid on their bellies on dry sand. It really is possible.
As far as taking the sharks in this tourney, I feel that as long as the fish are of legal size and are legal species to harvest, then I see no problem. It seems to me that Rec. fishermen always pay the price for commercial overfishing, which is where the problem has always been in regards to sharks. The industry successfully ruined brown, sandtiger and dusky populations in less than 2 decades. Landing and eating a half dozen sharks, no matter the size, once a year is not going to deplete the ocean, sorry to say. Landing thousands of tons a year from one commercial fleet can have a big impact , though.

The shark was very much alive. Doubters can come out some time and we’ll be more then happy to let the “dead” sharks gnaw on ya a bit. The chum would probably help our catch

I think we need a bigger boat…
