Rod Setup for wading surf

Hey Guys,

Quick question. I have a couple 9’ mojo surf rods with Baitrunner 8000 setups on them for surf fishing for big drum. I was interested what kind of setup people typically use for wading the surf and fishing in short range for speckled trout, flounder, pompano, black and red drum etc…? Thinking I would like a lighter rod for working the surf while I soak bait on the large setups.

Also, do any of you have any suggestions for artificial lures you use in the surf?

Cheers all - looking forward to the water warming up and the surf getting productive.

I have an old Penn 718 on a old school 6ft Fiberglass Rod that I have used for a very long time, and it has served this purpose well. Some will say go to 7ft and that of course is fine.So I guess I would say a 7ft spinning outfit will catch any fish you will want to catch while wadefishing…Also you need a very small thermal bag that has pockets and such for trout lures…and the big area for water and shrimp…Have a good one…Go catch em

As for lures…Mirrolures…Saltwater Assassins…I prefer the paddletails…colors…have some with green and some with brown for in the actual surf…and the Doa paddletails are lethal…The root beer with green tail is one of the best if not the best trout lure as far as the plastics…They have a few newfangled ones out as far as the bigger lures I have not tested in SC so I wont comment on them…

As for the reel if you are going to target trout…You must use 10lb or less line…If you use shrimp targeting them and others you can go up on the line…but if using the plastics…8lb…10lb…and if you are targeting trout with the shrimp…tie your own rig with hook and the least sized sinker you can get away with…You will catch more this way…

Surfman,

Thanks for the reply. Greatly appreciated. I fish a lot of artificials inshore so just trying to find out what works in the surf. Are you typically working these on a jighead? Based on your comment I’m thinking that maybe you are using a drop shot rig?

Thanks again.

Jigheads…mostly redhead…But that is preference…Tied straight to 10lb or 8lb line…

I use a 7’ med with a Cabo 40, 12lb. mono for pitchin’ jigs. 1-2oz red/white heads with a 4"-6" swim bait. Weeds out the dink Trout.

Whatever works for you.I was giving advice based on what has worked for me for the last 40 years.

Thank you both for the help - greatly appreciated.

Couple more questions:

In regard to 1-2 oz jigheads - I notice that the 1 oz+ jigheads are typically equipped with a 6/0 hook. Is that the case for you? Who makes the 2 oz jigheads you are using? I seem to only be able to find 1 oz. in the different brands I track - striper/trout eye, DOA, Slayer, etc…

In regards to your rod selection - what lure weight are your rods rated to?

Thanks again!

You can often get away with 1/4 or 1/2 oz jig heads when fishing the first trough. Even when wading to the bar to cast to the 2nd trough those are often enough for me. I don’t tend to catch trout when it’s rougher anyway they seem to like clearish green water. I don’t ever catch em on mirrolures but I know they are supposed to work. I would go with a 7ft rod with A 3000 size reel in the value class if it was to be designated for surf wading, so that it wouldn’t break the bank when it craps out due to salt intrusion.

Great advice.....I catch a whole lot more on jighead/assassins/doa...but I get a few here and there on the Mirrolures...Great advice on the reel...I tried by buying an old Penn 716z...but it wont die...Think I paid 50.00 for it 5 years ago

Thanks for all the ■■■■■■■■ guys. I have been looking around at rods and found a 7’ Mod/Light Power / Fast Action rod rated for 5/8-2 oz lures. I only wish that it was available in a 7’ 6" length. I think between the 9 footers soaking bait and working this rod with artificials I should be pretty productive and occupied.
