Rogue Boat...What would you do?

My dad and I made it down early on Friday for a weekend of fishing. So we headed up the Wando to my favorite spot in Fosters Creek. Upon entering the creek I noticed a boat circling in the distance. It quickly became obvious something was wrong. We found a young man treading water and pulled him in our boat. All was well except for the rogue circling boat. It eventually hit a crab pot line and flipped over. We eventually got him back to the landing to load his boat. My question to the forum is…Are there any recommendations on how to safely disable a rogue boat?

My guess…if the crab pot line stopped the one you saw then how about throwing a line out across the path of the moving boat and hopefully the line will catch the prop and kill the engine. Kind of what the crab pot line did?

Best to stay clear until it crashes, or runs out of fuel!

First - save the person. AND GET THE WARNING OUT. Hail the USCG ! Glad you did that. disable the boat if possible drag a rope in front of it or let it run into the marsh or crash. That’s about all you can do unless you have a firearm I had this happen many years ago. I got the people and put a bullet in the engine block. it was a pretty quick stop. The owner was pizzed about the motor- but alive .

Shooting the engine has got to be about the dumbest advice I’ve seen on this site.

Think whatever you want , but it disabled the danger - rather quickly.

That’s the way we used to do things back when America was great.haha.

Musta been a heck of a weapon! Do you carry one in your boat!

We all need to remember to wear our kill switches. I reached down to disconnect mine when I got back to the ramp the other day and realized I had not reconnected it when I turned for the hill. Oops.

It’s a hard habit to get into.

I agree claim! Although the incident will act as a reminder for me. My engineering mind wants to create something similar to a riding lawnmower where it cuts off when you standup… But even thats problematic.

30.06 and a 12 ga shotgun I used to have a hunting lease north of Charleston… The rifle shot was a hunting round that did not penetrate the block but cracked it badly.

Saw a girl get flipped out of a little 13 whaler when I was a kid and it was was open running circles around her, getting dangerously close several times. Some guys ran over in another boat, but could not get to her because of the boat circling. They took a bowline rope and threw it in front into the path and stalled the motor out and rescued her.

After being released, a lot of fish die, but a lot of them live also.

I saw an inboard engine stopped by a 7.62 mm APIT round. Did a good job.

Rope trick is a good idea. As others said, get the people out of the water and stay away

this happened to me many years ago and I happened to have a cowboy onboard, he rigged up a lasso and we got close to the boat and he threw his loop right over the throttle and was able to back it into neutral. Swear to god* *Donny Baker

It’s official–We need to do a “Rogue Boat Roundup!”

Natureboy can bring his guns… Fritz’ll bring his cowboy buddy… Sea Tonic his tow line… and Mixed Nutz with his binoculars so he can watch from a distance.

We’ll see who takes down that pesky boat first. My guess is Fritz’d beat all y’all’s asses by just throwing his cast net over the boat…
