route from Big Bay to Open Ocean?

Is it better to follow the bouys out or do you suggest the cut in the sandbar right next to the beach?

I have never made it all the way to the 3rd bouy before setting my course. It seems so far out of the way and I get impatient.

I have made safe trips via the cut and 2nd bouy, but the pucker factor is always their.

Coming down next week and really want to make it to Edisto Banks and maybe visit the Deli for the first time

Ive fished out of edisto a lot and worked on boats here from the time I was 17 to 22. When i use to work on the parasail boat we would go through the cut right off the beach in most any tide but we knew exactly where the deepest part of the cut was. even though we knew that cut very well we would still bump bottom once and a while. i wouldnt recomend going through it if your close to low tide. once you have a couple of hours of tide youll be fine. As far as heading offshore from the B can i never do that there are some spots out there where you could hit and get into some trouble. If im going offshore i just run to the A can then put the #s in. Also the A-can isnt that far out of the way when your heading towards the banks and if your going to the deli or sowpen its right on the way.

Thanks Edisto82,
A Can and GO

Now - any advise for getting to Otter Island without hitting the sand?

Theres 2 ways to get to otter island. if you want to enter from the front head out of big bay and run along the beach untill you can put your stern on the water tower and your bow facing the creek that runs through otter and pine. once you do that run towards otter untill you see the breakers. keep those breakers off your port side by about 50 yards and run like that untill the water towards pine island stars to deepen. that is the quickest way. If you want to enter the back way leave big bay and run towards ■■■■■■■ cut about a half mile before the cut there is a creek that heads towards ■■■■■■■ island (south bank of the edisto). Turn into this ceek and do no branch off it. Follow it untill you get to otter. The back way is longer but much eaiser if youre not that fammilur with the front way. just dont try the back way if there not a couple hours of tide it can get shallow in one stretch at low. The best way to learn the front entrance is running out you can see the outer sand bar the whole way and once the breakers on the offshore bar go away continue to run like the still there for a quater of a the turn back for the beach

I will try the back way to otter. We have had a blast exploring St Pierre and Big Bay Creek. Otter Island always seemed to raise my stress level splitting those sandbars.

Hope to explore the North Edisto alittle this year as well. According to the chart there are bouys marking the channel past the beach. Is that right? Is there anything to fear from bridge to the beach?

Thanks again for the nav aids.

The North Edisto is pretty easy to get around on if you stay in the channel and they do have bouys marking the channel when you head offshore (same as the south edisto)
