S. Edisto - Shrimp 10/20-10/22 - any tips ?

I’m taking my family to Edisto the weekend of 10/20 - 10/22 and my 4yr old son is very excited about catching shrimp. I’m familiar with South Edisto waters, but I haven’t shrimped the area in 5+ years. We’ll be in a small 14’ Lowe V-hull, so a trip to Combahee Bank is out of the question.

Any tips are greatly appreciated! I feel like the tides are playing against me. High 6am > Low noon > High 6pm. The lows are + as well.

In the past I’ve shrimped on the mud bank at the entrance of Big Bay Creek and the marina. We might try some afternoon shrimping along St Pierre Creek. We may also try some banks along Big Bay Creek and look for some holes.

What’s the best strategy for shrimping at 7pm when it’s a 6’ high tide? Any other suggestions for putting a smile on my 4yr olds face?

THANKS! Feel free to send me a private message.

Michael

Set up on the point of St Pierre and Store creek, there are no oyster for about 100 yds each way. Use to catch a good bit there with the kids, but not as big as the sound!

Looks like we’ll be dealing with a 15 mph-ish wind this weekend. So I’ll probably be sticking to Big Bay Creek and Fishing Creek to access St Pierre Creek.

We had a good weekend at the beach. Sunday 10/20 was a small craft advisory, cold and windy. We never ran through the bay because of conditions. We ran up Fishing Creek and went into a small creek about 2/3rds of the way to St Pierre. 14’ jon boat with an inexperienced father-in-law driving tiller and 15-20mph winds… We did catch shrimp just casting up the center of the creek. They were small - medium. My 4yr old was very happy. We caught enough to peel and fill a saute pan. We didn’t have too much luck with the poles so after doing a couple doughnuts, I decided to switch from shrimping to fishing. Everybody caught a couple fish croakers, whiting and some pinfish. Nothing special to us but the greatest thing ever to a 4 yr old. We were back at the dock around 1:30 without any trouble and all smiling.

My son’s quote when we got back to the house “Momma we caught sooo many shrimp… You can’t even count them’ all!”

That’s awesome. Reminds me of mine a long time ago.

Enjoy them now, once they start driving, they won’t have time to go with dad! But things change once they have little ones themselves!
