Sabiki Rigs

Saw a mention of them but tried search keep getting ERROR. Saw where they worked good for shad? Saw rigs for saltwater especially for bait fish.
Anyone familiar with sizes, colors that work, etc. Saw some for fluke. Anyone use them for flounder?

Use them a lot for baitfish. I perfer the ones made by eagle claw, #6 hooks with blue teasers. I put on a fingernail piece of shrimp. Caught whiting, blues, greenies, ladyfish, blue runners, spainish mackeral and some flounder.

I’ve had good luck using sabiki rigs for herring, chartreuse color and sometimes use the red bead, shad will bite them but with the small hooks ,a lot get away. For shad ,I use a 1/8 oz pink jig head with a chartreuse curly tail grub body about 1 and 1/2 in long.Never used in saltwater but I hear they are great for getting bait when going offshore.Any local tackle shop will carry them and sometimes Walmart.

You can catch Shad with the Sabki rigs, but I usually regret doing so. They can get snagged pretty bad on your landing net while trying to net a Shad. I use the #6 hook rigs that look like they have a pearl colored strip of plastic attached to the hook. Guys I have seen that actually want to catch Shad on a Sabki rig use the #4 size hooks.

Had a couple Shad on this past Thursday using a Sabki rig for Herring but played them until they came off. Didn’t want to deal with the mess netting them would have caused.

Made a rig like a Sabki for my Nephew to use offshore once. Tied five 3/8th ounce white Buck tail jigs on some 80 pound mono, with a 4 oz bank sinker on the bottom of the rig. Bouncing it on the bottom for BSB was a lot of fun.

They’re great for catching bait but man they do tangle up. If you are going to use them a lot, I’d look into a Sabiki rod.

Tiny white sabikis for herring and in the surf or inshore size 1 or 1/0 with something flashy works best

Sabiki Rigs have been my favorite part of a few Cobia fishing trips keeping the boredom down. Have loaded the live well with Greenies and if spanish are in the area swap to a gold spoon and better leader. They will destroy your sabiki rig.

I also tip with little pc shrimp. Fun for kids & myself when you get into some pin fish.

Get the large sabiki rig and drop it in 100’, and hold on…

Yes, you can. cast either into the breakers or right behind breakers. Put some fingernail sized shrimp on. I use a 3 oz pyramid sinker. If the fish are there, they’ll hit . I use sabikis all the time. Can’t remember last time I used a Carolina rig or double drop rig.

One more question… do you think i could put the sabiki rig on a 8 ft medium/heavy rod with 40lb brain? i am guessing i would go braid/ to a heavy mono leader correct?

Jeffrey Wakefield

You could if you wanted to.
Just ty a snap swivel to the braid and attach sabiki.

I find the best way to fish with a Sabiki rig is with two people. One guy works the rod and the second guy manages the rig and unhooks any fish you catch as the line comes over the side. Holy Moses don’t let the rig touch anything in the boat. It will hopelessly snag whatever it comes in contact with!!!

Great bait catcher! Be carefull of all those sharp little hooks. I have never used them when I haven’t had to pull out hooks in my hands when I takeoff the bait and they are flipping all over the place. Just grab a pair of needle nose and start jerking them out.

dehooking tool works well getting bait off the hooks…slide the dehooker down to each little hook and shake the bait fish off…

Glad your fingers are working again so you can type…but don’t you have a job?

I want to see you use that dehooker on a Sabiki rig.
