It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything here, but I figured this was worthy.
Left Remley’s around 4 and headed out on my buddy’s 22’ Scout the “Miss B Haven” for her maiden voyage to the ledge. Lines in around 6:45. Picked up a nice dolphin and had another bigger one surface and come through our spread sideways like an angry shark. He hit one of the short lines and ran, but Brad set the drag a little too early and popped the line. Was quiet for the next 2 hours or so then the daymaker(s) came. About a mile from the 380 hole I was driving and Brad saw a Sailfish hit one of the short lines. Then the WTFB started screaming. Double Sail hookup! We scrambled to clear the other 3 lines each with a bent over rod in hand. I fought the fish on the way-back about halfway in then set the rod in the holder to snap a few pics and help get Brad’s fish free. Got the first one off in about 15 minutes and picked up the other rod and the other sail was still on. Got him to the boat too for a pic or two and released back into the deep blue. First billfish for either of us (I’ve never even seen one in person)…man they’re beautiful fish. I’m guessing they were both in the 50lb range. Had a few more knockdowns, but nothing else to bring home. Can’t complain though…this is something I’ve been waiting to strike off my list for a long time. Ocean was slick calm in the morning and just a touch of chop for the ride home. Thanks again Brad…let’s do it again soon!!
So, did both of the sails die? I saw one with the stomach hanging out of his mouth (dead) and the other bleading from the gills (probably dead). Thanks for the report, this should go at least 3 pages. Nice work on the sails and mahi.
First one did die. I’m kicking myself now because I didn’t know you can keep them. We would have brought it home had we known, but he unfortunately became part of the food chain. Second one needed a little reviving, but he did swim away.
That pic with the his stomach hanging out better disappear quickly and tell that story again and dont even talk about that fish because you will get hammered over and over again about that!
Apparently the controversial pics have gone poof.If you had a fishing lic,hms permit, didn’t keep any sails,or pull any out of the water, you haven’t done anything wrong or illegal imho.I don’t see anything wrong with catching a fish that has it’s stomach protruding. It is sad,but could happen to any of us.I don’t get the bad karma comments.

I’d take the boat name off too… if you did not have an HMS permit, you are not allowed to fish for them and the Permit is based on boat name. I am just relaying the rules as I know them… you do whatever you want and I will not be upset either way…

Polly Wanna…
Who said he was fishing for them…I swear it is like a billfish is a vessel for the second coming. You can go fishing without an hms. Sails as bycatch ain’t gonna land any prison time or fines. To heck with the lovefest
… a billfish is a trash fish if you want something to eat…
If u billfish lovers think Guys like this are the problem, then you need to actually pay attention some more.

I could give a flying fuc k about those 2 sailfish… I was just telling him the rules. If you do not agree with the rules, then that is cool…
Q: Do I need a recreational permit to fish for or land tunas, sharks, swordfish, and/or bilfish?
A: Yes, vessel owners/operators who recreationally fish for or retain regulated Atlantic tunas (bluefin, yellowfin, bigeye, albacore, and skipjack), sharks, swordfish, and billfish in Atlantic Federal waters, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, must obtain an HMS Angling category permit or a HMS Charter/Headboat permit. However, General category vessels may fish recreationally for HMS so long as they are participating in a registered recreational HMS tournament and fishing under tournament rules. Vessels fishing exclusively in state waters are required to obtain the HMS Angling permit if they wish to ke
