Saltwater Gar?

Drug this dude up on the bank today. Easily about 24 inches in length. Sorry about the mud but I wasn’t inclined to grab it.

I grew up in Florida where we had some bodacious sized freshwater gar, but was not aware there was a salt water version.

I was in a salt water creek that branches right off the Broad River at PI so there is no brackish element here.

No Reds or Sheepshead today. Wife even saw a Red nosing around but would not take the fiddlers. Too many Stingrays to try to use shrimp on the bottom. I did catch and release about a three foot black tip that grabbed one of my live menhaden. Walked out with four Blues that ranged from 10-14 inches that are going on my smoker tomorrow. I love smoked Blue fishes cuz they are delicious.

i swear… them and roaches will be the only thing left on the earth… from south fl and i used to catch them in fresh, brackish ad salt all the time…

Caught about a 3 footer in a cast net in the upper Broad some years back. Took me 30 minutes to get the (**() thing out of the net with the mono tangled in it’s teeth and around the scales. They are very common in the brackish and salt waters.

That’s one of the fish we like to watch at night on the dock across from Sam’s Point. There are typically a couple that hang out under the security light.

Got a friend on Edisto who would rather eat them than flounder!
