On call for the weekend, doing my daily rounds and I stop by this saltwater lake for about 20-30 mins usually to see if anything will hit.
4th cast on a black/silver paddler and hook up with a nice, fat red. 8 foot gator was in tow and when the red splashed the surface, the gator made a b line for the red. the red was stripping line, so i decided to tighten the drag and just hoss him in to keep the gator from getting it. had 30lb braided line and 20lb mono-leader so i wasnt worried about a break off. Got the red in, 23 in exactly and into the cooler for dinner and finished my rounds.
I could be wrong by the location of Goose Creek, but must be nice not to get run off. I’m pretty sure that I’ve fished that creek numerous times and have given up on it as I get run off by different people on different days in different areas from time to time. Glad to see it’s not off limits to those enforcing the “off limits”. Fish the rocks on rising tide towards the spillway and you’ll load up on some big flounder if this is the spot I think it is.
That’s at Hooker Lake on the Naval Weapon station.
Ive fished there a few times and never had any luck…
Great spot for crabbing.
Awesome crab spot. Heard tons of flounder in there. Water was going out of the spill well so I’m sure he was feeding on minnows heading out to the creek…were you talking about a creek inside the Weapon station or outside of it?
I’m assuming that it’s only open to Navy (bummer for the rest of us, but it’s worth it for you guys) but that’s still an awesome redfish.

Good job and nice fish. I know what happens when someone makes an assumption, too.
I’m Air Force. LoL it’s open to all military and DoD civilians. I think what made it a memorable catch was the gator trying to get an easy lunch. Ha
Nice! I’ve seen schools of reds in there but couldn’t get them to bite. I usually just toss the cast net there and head to pier bravo.

Hooker has some HUGE mullet. Those things are jumping everywhere.
How do you get to hooker? Do you have to go through the gate?
I bet my fish is bigger then yours…
Fishing is open to all Active duty/DOD civilians and retired folks…but a JBC Fishing permit is required and can be obtained at outdoor rec for a hefty fee of $7.
(**() nice catch by the way!
Is it clear by that spillway? Enough to throw a cast net and not get hung up?
Congrats on the red. I dont hear to many say they caught a red out of there.
The fishery on base has to be one of the best places to fish from shore in the Charleston area.
Be a good stuard and hammer those that arent.

Zoom into goose creek.
Where the dashed Hanahan city line touches Goose Creek you are able to fish. Essentially the first dock on the left hand side is the border.
Anything up stream from that first dock is fair game.
If you are below that dashed line keep moving. You dont have to be on plane but you need to be moving. Trolling motor is moving. I sit under that bridge sometimes and people work those banks pretty regularly.
Franky is seems to be clear. When I’ve jigged tree before beer got hung up. Friogatto…not sure what you are calling the Fishery?
I use the term fishery because it is all managed by the different organizations that make up JBC. They may not be raising and releasing fish but they are regulating who, when, where, and how much. This makes it a managed area and in my eyes a fishery. We even have our very own volunteer game wardens.
Structure docks/piers/warfs for reds, trout, flounder, grunts, spot, croaker, shark, and sheephead. Saltwater lakes for an occasional red or flounder. Any type of bait, mullet, shrimp, mudminnows, bluecrabs and Fiddlers by the hundreds. Dont forget about all the freshwater ponds/creeks that hold bass and bluegills.
Spread over several hundred acres.
Put it all together and to me thats a great though highly regulated fishery.
Franky,
there are chunks of concrete and cinder blocks by the spill way (they “move” around so be careful). You can see them on a clear day and will eat a net. The rest of the area is fairly clean. There are stumps by the trees next to the dock.
True. I just hate some of the places in Ordinance look amazing to fish, but cant fish them anymore.
Athon08 There are some really good flounder there to. Pm me and Ill tell you wear to catch them there. My father works at Spawar and I used to fish there all the time…
Wishin I was fishin.
I tried jigging in there, top water and paddle tail swim baits. All I caught was grass lol.
Athon08,
I just stopped by Hooker Lake the other day, first time I’d ever been there. have heard good stuff about it, but it looked full of weeds and we were after flounder that day. I’ve been doing the GW duty on base for about 4 yrs, but didn’t do much fishing out there, not sure what I was thinking.
I’ve been on a flounder kick lately, caught a few the other night, but ran out of bait. Was only able to catch a few baitfish at Bushy…any tips where to catch bait/flounder on the base?
I’ve been getting bait for years from the creek just on the other side of the road from Hooker Lake. I set my minnow with the outgoing/incoming tides with some dog food in it. You can easily get enough bait for the weekend and then some. You can easily get 50+ minnows in a day if you play the tides right. If you’re setting it at low tide just make sure to get out there about an hour before official low tide otherwise your minnows will bake in the sun. Luckily I work just down the road from Hooker Lake so I can run and check my trap if low tide is in the middle of the day. If you have an questions, just let me know.
I don’t mind going to work but this sitting here for 8 hours waiting to go fish is bull.
