Saluda River

I have recently started fishing the Saluda river just below Lake Murray dam and was curious if anyone here also fished this area? I have a few specific questions? Anyone?

yep. i have a few times. more of a lake guy now though.

Watch out for the rocks!!.. Ive fished there a few times.

Fished the saluda yesterday caught 6 fish the smallest around 25" the largest 37" inches pushing 20 pounds.

Striperking,

Are you using live bait or artificials? We have been having some luck with the live bait. This river striper thing is new to me but have been having a blast down on the river. I plan on being there today, how about yourself?

“The Unsinkable Legend”

Live bait. not fishing the river today

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up on the new regs in the rivers. As of June 1 you can’t possess any stripers until Oct. 1. When you can keep them they must be at least 26 inches with a limit of 3. You can still do catch and release. Whaler, I’ve been fishing the Saluda for 30 years. I’d be glad to answer any questions you have.

Riverman,

There is a second set of rapids beneath Metts Landing and I haven’t found how to get thru without beating the heck out of my prop. I don’t really just want to bump thru seeing how I’ve got to get back up stream to take out. I would like to fish the strech of river just above the I-26 bridge. How often do you fish the Saluda? Thanks in advance for any tips!

“The Unsinkable Legend”

Whaler, you’ve met the infamous “Hole in the Wall” I see. You really only have two options here. Either bump and grind your way thru the hole, or get out and walk it thru. Neither is very easy(on you or your boat). I have seen a guy go down it backwards but I don’t recommend that. I haven’t fished the Saluda as much as I used to simply because the numbers of fish are way down compared to historical levels. Hopefully with the new regs in place the fish will rebound. I normally use a private ramp downriver from that hole to get to the bridges.

The old “hole in the wall”! That’s a good name for that area. I watched a guy with a jet drive go thru it last week. Could’nt really tell how bad it was because of how loud the motor was. When aprroaching the “hole in the wall”, what side would you suggest “bumping” down. Also, would be more than happy to pay someone a “ramp fee” to keep from killing my boat and motor, if possible. If you ever want to get together and fish, just let me know. Its hard to beat that cool breeze on the river this time of year!

“The Unsinkable Legend”

Whaler, you have to hug the right side and do a tricky “S” maneuver, but you’ll still make contact at low water. Just shoot me your email and maybe we can go sometime. No ramp fee required.

if i’m thinking of the same place, i found the easiest way down is through the middle. there’s a narrow run that you can get through. still, pull the motor up all the way. it takes a couple times to learn the area. i’ve done it a few times without getting out or bumping the boat up too bad…going down that is. up is a whole different story. i’ve tried the s turn thing, but i find it hard to keep the boat on line, fighting the current.

best advice i was ever given was to watch the water and follow the flow around and sometimes over the rocks. take some paddles.

Let me make sure we are talking about the same place. It’s the second set of major rapids below Metts landing. There are a couple of houses on the right just before this set. There is also a creek mouth on the left hand side before the rapids along with some huge boulders on the left. Thanks for repsonding to this thread. I sell boats here in Columbia and spend most of my time on the lake. I have only recently started to explore the Saluda and have been having a great time doing so. We are lucky to have so many natural resources to enjoy!

“The Unsinkable Legend”

The Wallhole I’m referring to is about a half mile below the creek on the left and it has eaten many lower units. It’s the first major navigational obstruction below Metts.

I think we are talking about the same place. I may just have to go ahead a go for it, motor up of course. I quess the real trick will be getting back up stream to the landing. Another, question. If you look up stream from the I-26 bridge, you can see a small dock or something on the lefthand side of the stream and it appears that there is some type of road that goes down to this area. There doesn’t look like is a ramp there however my boat is only a 12 footer and could be pushed down the bank to the water. Do you know if this is public or private property? Question #2, my first intentions of fishing the river is for the stripers however a buddy told me that the river is full of small mouth bass, as well. I have never fished for them. What’s the best way to fish for them? I realize that I am asking of alot, but to assure you I am a catch and release fisherman. I not looking to deplete the river!

“The Unsinkable Legend”

That ramp is on private property. As far as smallies go, we used to catch them years ago when trout fishing, but as far as i know there isn’t a large population now. There have been reports of them in the Broad and upper Congaree recently.

Whaler … try this link to take a look around http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTCP&cp=34.022769~-81.099014&style=h&lvl=15&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&scene=12775173&phx=0&phy=0&phscl=1&ss=yp.river%20runner~pg.1~sst.0&encType=1

try birds eye view, its pretty cool

The more you fish, the better you lie.

14.5 'yak 175 lb motor

does anyone know if that is sewage treatment just above the 26 bridge?

Sure looks like one

I’ve got a 14 ft. alum. v-hull. How tough is it to get from Mett’s Landing up to the dam area? I was thinking of trying it next week.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Bob
