Did anybody do any good? We caught shark after shark today. Probably put 30 sharpnose in the boat today. Caught one before the first line hit the water good and they never slowed up. Also hung one monster that was going to spool us, but it jumped about 200 yards from the boat and straightened the hook. Had to finally quit fishing on the bottom so we wouldn’t run out of bait. All in all is was fun, but it sucks to drive 2 hours to not get what you’re going after.

That’s probably a couple over the limit
I usually only fish one bait on the bottom and it catches more sharks than cobia, but it gives you something to do while playing the waiting game.
No way am I going to be fishing Broad River on Memorial Day weekend[:0]

No worries, we put them right back out again. We only had two rods on the bottom, but that was too many. Oh, the greenies were real hard to come by today for some reason. We finally had to ride around and marked some on the depthfinder in order to catch any at all.

Greenies were few and far in between the last time I was out but found enough to fish with. The Cobia numbers have got to be down this year. Definitely not the same fishery that it use to be. We need to be releasing all the big females we can in my opinion. I have a hard time driving 20 mins to the ramp sometimes for Cobia much less 2 hours. Don’t get me wrong I like catching them… Sitting in the river waiting not so much. Not like back in the day when I was single and had a couple fine ladies on the boat kicked back downing some cold ones.

Sharpnose are not bad eating. Hope you kept a couple to try.
You need to bleed em out boatside while alive tho. Stick a knife up the poopshoot and run it to the head and clean them out then ice.
Not something I target but they grill up well. Our friends that come down from Columbia want all we can legally catch:smiley:.

Hate to hear that the Cobia are not biting well. I will be down 28th and 29th fishing for Cobia for the first time. I’ll post my results here regardless of what I catch.
Good luck to you man! Hopefully you are able to put one in the boat!

Going to make the 2hr ride from charleston on the 31st. Sounds like more are being caught around the chas area and offshore than the river; or everybody is just tight lipped!! Oh well, bad day of catching always beats work!!

I fished last week from the bridge to the turtle, all typical spots, never had a problem catching greenies off the chum bag. Went 7 for 11 on cobia, and probably a dozen sharks. Lost three big 50# plus cobia one day, two spooled the reels. Only two cobia came on greenies, all other fish were on cut bait on the bottom. Did not see many other fish caught. Our best day was the 18th, 4 for 4, all on cut bait. Heard of a group went to the Ross yesterday and had their limit in a couple hours. Who knows?
Can I borrow your towel? My car just hit a water buffalo.
I fished the rip straight out from Skull Creek, along with 3-4 other boats. Very little bait, even with two chum bags going. One on the bottom and one up top. Caught 3 sharp nose before the thunderstorm ran us off. All on cut mullet on the bottom. Zero cobia and didn’t see any caught.
Guess I wasn’t holding my mouth right.
All things being equal, I would rather be on the water.
Fished PI rip, and turtle on Sunday and Monday. No greenies. Lots of chum and no bait. Sharks wouldn’t let us fish on the bottom. Even the whiting were hard to come by. One cobia hookup on Monday. Pulled hook. We did get a good look at him before it got away and it was a big one. Would of easily topped my biggest which is 48#. Oh well that’s fishin.
NN, youre right about eating those sharpnose, and bonnets as well. Cut em into fingers and fry em with some Cajun seasoning. Gotta clean and ice em within 10 minutes. My family like them better the reds.
Thanks for the info fellas. I will be on the water around 8AM 170 ramp. I have no idea where to start but the previous post do help a little.
For what it’s worth that cobia was with a sea turtle. We saw it go across our chum slick. Less then 5min later rod went off. Only turtle we saw in two days. No Spanish either. We actually rode out looking for them Sunday afternoon.
Mark fish on the rips. There will be boats lined up on each one. You can’t miss them. If you are getting out there at 8am the tide will be almost at dead high. Fishing might be slow until the tide turns and starts going out again. When the tide gets close to low I would pull anchor and ride around while it’s slack and try some sight fishing. When the tide starts to start moving again anchor back out. The bite is not good on slack tides. I also do this because I get bored and it’s nice to drive the boat around a bit and get some fresh breeze. Over the years the bite seems to be better on higher tides but it’s not fool proof. Good luck! If you have any questions feel free to ask.

What he ^^^ said, but also use the slack tides to catch your bait. Find them right on the humps that cause the rips with the depthfinder and drop a sabiki rig to them. Last weekend they were balled up tight and you had to be right over them. When the tide was running hard, the greeneis wouldn’t bite anything.

Thanks for the info mad fire and tigerfin!!! We caught our greenies around the old bridge (pier). We caught the greenies early but did not catch any in the afternoon so we pulled out around 3PM. We only caught sharks. One at the bridge rip. And several more near the shallow water toward the south. I am not too disappointed since it was my first trip. I really appreciate the help form everyone. I probably try for some reds and trout tomorrow before going home
Sucks you didn’t have any luck with the cobia. Maybe next time! Good luck with the reds and trout!

Well when we pulled away form the dock this morning we saw greenies schooling everywhere so we decided to give the Cobia another try. We filled our livewell and setup under the bridge in two different spots throughout the day. We didn’t catch a thing!! But I am now very skilled at catching greenies! They were everywhere!!!
We did see three Cobia caught by two different boats. I am pretty sure they were using greenies too. I am gonna give them another try tomorrow. Wish me luck!
Any luck JumpNCobia?
