Fished around low tide both Sat and Sun morning. Sat got into a school of bluefish about an hour before low tide, and caught 4 around 10-12 inches. About an hour after low I caught the pictured pompano. 14 1/2 inch fork length. Sun was not as productive. Fished around low tide again, but only caught 3 whiting just before low tide. All 3 were in the 10-12 inch range. Nothing caught after low tide. All fish caught on shrimp.
nice pompano. bite was slow for us yesterday.
Agree. Fished the same spot and roughly same time/tide both days. Bite was much slower yesterday than on Saturday. Wondering if the wind was the factor on Sunday. Only light wind out of the SSE on Saturday. Water was pretty calm with light current and waves. Sunday was a different story. The wind was probably 10-12 mph out of the West. Current was not too bad, but waves were larger and more messy. No whiting caught on Saturday, but whiting was all I caught on Sunday.

Very nice Pomp! Obviously surf, standard two hook drop?
Yep. Standard 2 hook drop with 3oz pyramid. 1/0 mutu light circle hooks. Red beads above the hook. Small piece of shrimp. Caught about an hour after low tide.

Thanks. I’m becoming a big fan of circles as I find the hook sets very well and seems to be easier to remove without much damage to the fish.
NICE POMP! Was it good? Water temp must be hitting the 70 mark.
That is a really nice pompano. Seems like a few people are catching them. Good one!

DParker677 - Thank you. First pomp, after a couple of years trying to catch one. Check one more species off the list. Unfortunately I did not keep the fish. I have an 8 yr old daughter who is a future animal rights activist. She was with me, and would have been upset if I kept it. In her words, “That fish is too pretty to kill. Besides, what if it has babies?” Who can argue with that? Unfortunately for me and my wife, I put her happiness above mine, so pompy was returned to the ocean. Maybe when she becomes a teenager, and doesn’t want to hang out with Dad anymore, I will be able to keep some fish. In the meantime I cherish every moment with her. (The ribeye I grilled on Saturday night was not a bad replacement.)

Very well done, (not the ribeye). Your children grow up and are gone in the blink of an eye. Enjoy every precious moment you have with them as you can never get that time back. Worse, no matter how much time together, you will have doubts down the road whether you spent enough time with them.
Very nice pompano. If you don’t mind telling me, what beach were you fishing at?
Isle of Palms. Email sent.
Nice fish, but I do disagree in not keeping it if you really wanted to. I think it is extremely important to teach the next generation that the fish and animals are to be taken care of by man, but it’s okay to harvest some for food. If we don’t teach them that, they’ll be ruling over us in 20 years telling us we can’t keep them or stick hooks in them… I understand not wanting to upset a child, but sometimes that’s your duty as a parent so your child will know what is right. As a fisherman, you really don’t want to play into that PETA BS.

Come on, you’re giving the guy a hard time because he didn’t keep a fish?
Wish more people has his attitude instead of the “you catch it, you kill it” mentality.
Believe me, I’m no tree hugger but if my young daughters said “Daddy, will you let that fish go please”, there’s no way I can say “No” to those angels.

Reread my post. I’m not giving him a hard time at all for releasing that fish, as I release 95% of what I catch as well and I actually released the last keeper pomp I caught. I am giving him “a hard time” for relating her happiness to doing everything she says to make her happy. That will bite you later! At 8 yrs old, she is a perfect age to teach responsible harvesting. Kids that age are smart enough to understand, but yet still open enough to be taught things. In 3-4 more years, she’ll know everything and he won’t be able to get a word in! And that’s coming from a father of four teenagers… Thos
