Looked like the weather scared everybody from going out yesterday morning. Only one boat putting in at Remley’s when we got there and a few more followed behind us. Water was smooth the whole ride out. Got to the Charleston 60 around 7 and dropped the lines. Catching a lot of grunts, ringtails, and bsb’s as usual. Moved around a few times to try an pick up something different. Barracuda got a hold of our lines a few times but kept spitting the hook. What a sight to see him jumping through the air, almost landed in the boat on one jump. In the process of trying to get the cuda lured back in, had a 10’ shark swimming around the boat. I changed over to a shark rig with a bigger hook, dropped the bait over and within 10 seconds the line was being ripped off the reel so fast we had to release the anchor to chase this Cuda down. After an hour, we finally saw color and pulled him into the boat. A lot of people trolling, didn’t see much action with them even further inland. Headed back in around 2, got stopped by the Coast Guard for a “routine” boat check, ripped the boat apart and found nothing so home we went. Great day of fishing.
I heard alot of people say it stinks but I didn’t smell anything outta the ordinary. I’ve got some nice fillets and I’m gonna eat it. You hear good and bad things about certain from different people but I just do everything on my own and find out for myself.
not worth the risk! Cigutera is some bad mojo. Takes weeks to recover. A Georgia couple got it from a cuda on the thunderstar and were sick for months. plenty of good things to eat out there besides a cuda.

Yeah, we can see that. Anybody that hauls in a mess of rings and a cuda is still low on the learning curve or really hungry.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Well after all the negativity spreading around about the possible ciguatera in my cuda, I did my own research and found out that there has only been 2 reported cases in South Carolina and that was in 2004. Ciguatera is found on coral reefs in tropical waters which neither apply to me. Other species known to carry this are snappers, groupers, amberjacks, mackerel, triggers, and a few others but I don’t see anyone passing those fish by so I’ll stick to the facts, not the hear say and throw it on the grill. Not a Clemson fan but the university did a study and says ciguatera is not a concern in South Carolina.
Where do you think all of our barracuda go in the winter time?
But, if you like ringtails, you’ll probably love barracuda! Just make sure you have a lot of ketchup…
But you are correct. Ciguatera is very rare here. I think that people around here just don’t place any value on cuda at all and would rather not risk it anyway as there are so many better eating fish in the sea.
You know what they say though… One man’s junk is another man’s treasure!
I don’t know what the meat smells like, I’ve never gotten that far but the fish has an odor when you pull it out of the water. My dad caught a small one one time. He was gonna keep it to be mounted, though it would look cool on the wall. About an hour later we opened the fish box and the stench was terrible.
Needless to say we threw it over the side for the sharks.

don't mind all of these so called "experts" on this site, most have nothing to do,and all day to do it.two, for sure.
back in the day we caught, cleaned and ate cudas several times a season.the meat has a nice white color, and fries up nicely.the odor is there, but nothing to write home about.Triggers have a funky smell too.
Oh,and the big Sullivans Island fish fry,the one that has been happening since 1949,guess what fish has been served over there in the past?
Nice catch rickyparish, you gotta start somewhere.keep up the good work.
