I fished with a couple of good friends yesterday in Broad River, smaller creeks and rivers above the bridge.
It was a beautiful day on the water for December, got to love it! Not a breath of wind, not a ripple. Water temp was 60-62, clear and green.
Started fishing about 2 hours before low and one of my buddies caught a fish on the first cast of the day. Short trout, usually not a good sign, but the bite was steady, if not fast. The dang gnats got so bad that we had to move for relief. That’s the bad thing about a nice day in December, and they were BAD! Fish and move, fish and move. We hit about 6 different spots and caught a few trout in each of them. We didn’t get a redfish all day, but ended up 35-40 trout, over half of them shorts, biggest was 22". All fish were in deep moving water, outside bends near structure. 12-20 feet. We didn’t find a fish shallower than 12’. Also caught 1 whiting, 1 flounder and 1 ray.
Fished the tide back up to high, gnats were still terrible. Packed it up for a nice ride back to the hill.
I don’t think I could live anywhere else

Oh yeah, Skin so Soft has been around for 30 years, But it doesn’t work very well for me and I hate that nasty, greasy, stinkin stuff on me. I’d rather have the gnats. I can out run them if they get too bad

Great report Cracker Larry. Ain’t it nice when the weather’s like this in December! Nice Pics. The gnats were out in force today…nuttin’ but flyin’ teeth!
There weren’t any reds for you to catch on Saturday cause they were all around me! There had to be 1,000 fish around the boat at one time. They were extremely picky though… We only manage to catch about a dozen or so. Fish bit the best on the out going tide. I picked up a few trout here and there as well.
Oh and the best thing I find to keep the gnats from biting when they’re bad is sun screen. Regular ole coppertone 30spf not near as much stink as skin so soft and I guess they don’t like the way it tastes they crawl around but won’t bite ya

x2!
blow some blue smoke from the old merc, run around, put on the long sleeves and hat, fire up a black and mild… back to business.
We have head nets in the boat for using if the fishing is good and the gnats are bad, and I’m always in long pants and sleeves anyway.
But it sounds like a good day on water LC! There’s a reason why we continue to take our vacation there every year…IF we weren’t living on homesteaded family land up here we would definitely be living down there!!!..but roots go pretty deep up here just like they do for you all down there.
Thernacell works great for everything. I’ve always user one. And whenever I don’t have it on me I regret it! These noseeums are bad right now, on Monday last week I git bit by mosquitoes bass fishin.

I keep 2 head nets in my boat too, but we weren’t fishing in my boat. I’ve also got a full bug tamer suit, but it was at the house:smiley:
Hunter, I’m going to bring the Thermacell next time and see how it works on flying teeth. I really had no idea they would be that bad or I would have been better prepared

Very cool! This time of year is great! We were targeting trout in deep holes, so didn’t really expect many reds there, but usually pick up a few by accident.

I kept a steady smoke screen going all day Glad I brought plenty of extras.
When I was a kid running the rivers in old wooden bateaus, we would put a washtub in the bottom of the boat, build a fire in and load it up with moss and pine straw. I bet that would draw a crowd today:clown_face:
