Sav. Rockpile - Christmas Eve

In an effort to let my youngest daughter Ellie ( Sr. at Clemson) catch a Bull Red , Ellie , Lauren , her sister ( who has caught several bull reds) and I headed out on Christmas Eve around 11:00am ( my crew are definitely not early risers!) to the Sav. rockpile with some frozen mullet an a few large jigs. The wind was howling , but with holiday schedules, I did not have many fishing days open they could go. Seas initlaly not too bad when we arrvied. After about 1 hour with no bites , and several lost rigs due to rocks, we moved north about 1-2 miles where hundreds of gannetts , seagulls and dolphins were feeding heavily. Although we fished right where they were feeding like crazy, could not find any redfish underneath the bait, which was piled near the surface.
Although the wind and seas were building, we headed back to the rockpile for one more shot. Unfortunately no takers and headed home with no fish. Highlight of trip was watching hundreds of gannetts dive bombing the bait. It looked like an episode from National Geographic!

Hopefully we will get another fish day before my two daughters return to school.
Merry Christmas everyone!

ps. I feel like my posts balance out those of Wildlifesc, who has great catches and photos every trip. I guess I need to fish with him some in 2014.

Good post Russell, for one you are to be commended for taking your daughters fishing, and two, providing good information about the fishing conditions even though the catch was not what you were looking for.Keep up the good work.

Believe me Russell…I get skunked too! Great you took you youngest out…we need to nurture all these budding young anglers (and hunters)…they are our future.

Wildlifesc- you are correct. I checked your past posts. 4 years ago, on 8/13/09, you went out on a trip and did not catch any fish ( your engine quit on the way OUT!). That makes me feel a little better,

When we were stationed at Hunter Air Force Base, Dad used to catch a ton of Sheep Head around that area. Mom was suppose to find some of the old pictures. If she comes up with them I’ll post. Also on the groins around Tybee Island were some terrific fishing.

One rule of thumb for me, if you see Dolphin feeding an area, don’t bother fishing it. You can be on a terrific Trout or Spot Tail bite and when the Dolphin move in the fish move out. Or that has been my experience.

for what it’s worth I’ve never caught a nice bull red after November when the water temp drops below 60 really. Of course this may be poor fishing technique or dumb luck, but thought I’d share anyways!
