Scheduling?

We all know that of lately USC (Clemson Grads, this mean University of South Carolina) has opened up football season on Thursday night against a quality opponent. While other teams basically have a scrimmage.
So I wonder why would anyone not want that scrimmage?
I like my team opening up the season, but I hate it being against a quality team. Going the scrimmage route makes a ton of sense.

It all depends. If you beat the quality opponent, then you’re a leg up on the competition and your players are already battle tested. If you lose, well, that’s a big hole to try and climb out of. I would think coaches would like to play those games because they expect to win them.

There are positives and negatives to both, but the risk/reward may not be worth losing that first game of the season.

I will say that personally I very much enjoy watching some quality games in the first few weeks of the season. If everyone played cupcakes it would be a very boring weekend.

I just like the fact that a middle of the pack program from the All Cupcake Conference becomes a quality opponent when they are on the gamecocks schedule.

I meant a non cupcake team, Div 1 team. And I always think UNC is a quality team. He11 their players dont even need to goto classes, even made up classes.

you would think k a team like the gamecocks wouldn't be on your radar but instead you are consumed by them and have something to say on every thread about them.

You’d think I was talking about your girl friend with your defensive posture.

Didn’t Clemson open up with Georgia a few years back? SC hasn’t always opened with quality opponents, just seems that way in the last few years.

Clemson’s opened with UGA the past two years. I think you’re going to see the cupcakes disappear from the power 5 conferences games completely over the next few years. SOS will play a big role in position throughout the year for the playoff. Right now, these schedules have been set for a while and it’s hard to back out and redo. I’d rather see my team open up with a big game, gets it going from the start.

UNC/Sakkerliner should be a pretty good game. Probably more to see which one has taken a step forward on defense.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

The good thing about the way CFB is, if you lose early there is time to rebound. Lose late…tough luck.

Clemson opened up with UGA the past two years and Auburn before that

And bama before that. I love the hype of a big game early. Granted it can wreck you like bama did to us that year.

Exactly shevy. USC last year had all the hype but an a$$ wooping by A&M wreck everything about them. dont get me wrong they were not that good, but that crashing back to reality was bad.

Regarding “quality” opponents and a few thoughts on the game…I keep up with these guys (know a few players and family) - UNC should be better this year…they will battle and they have a lot of experienced players returning. Several of them have a lot to prove if they want to play at the next level. Who will play QB isn’t a question for us and maybe Chizik (even though he’s only been there a very short time) has had some positive impact on the awful defense we had last year.

The key for UNC is the OL and the ability to run…and avoiding early predictable plays and 3 and outs…that has plagued UNC under Fedora (even though they tend to put up a lot of points eventually)…being able to run the ball is stating the obvious, but it’s even more important for a team who’s QB was their leading rusher last year. That’s always a problem. We have a solid RB corps with Elijah Hood and TJ Logan but the OL couldn’t make any holes last year. The OL will be improved this year - lot of buzz about how well they are doing.

I hope that UNC has made a lot of progress and beats USC, but this game is still a toss up IMO. Pretty sure that USC is favored by 3 points but that just proves my point. Could go either way. I never count out the old ball Spurrier…I believe he’s only lost 2 opening games in his entire career, which I believe spans over 124 years.

Spurrier should run the ball all night until the UNC defense stops him…but that’s not easy for him and his style. We have good corners and their QB is young…interceptions could play a role. USC has more question marks than UNC right now IMO - guess we’ll see. I’ll be at the game… willing to pay the high price for the “cheap” seats.

A 7-6 team playing a 6-7 team on a Thursday night…seems like the ticket prices would’ve been a little more reasonable, but I don’t want to miss this one.

No matter how you feel about who is playing/quality, etc…I am really gla
