I’m not sure how it’s possible that in the middle of May several boats can go out and not even catch a dolphin. Unexplainable
They probably aren’t pulling white braid…
shhhh…the SAFMC is listening
If I’m posting, its because I’m sitting here at work, dreaming about fishing.
Probably doesn’t have anything to do with increased fishing pressure along the east coast over the last ten years.

Think about it… Best marlin tournament ever here, pilot whales seen, fin whales seen, record amounts of leather back turtles in our waters, portuguese man-o-war warning a few weeks ago, lot’s of white birds around, tons of scattered grass.
If that doesn’t sound like “environmental change”, then I don’t know what will convince you.
There is ton of bait everywhere out there. Fish have a lot to eat. Might have something to do with it, but I agree its a weird year
“mr keys”
I’m confused skinnee…we don’t fish for whales turtles and jellyfish…not getting your point
Me neither. Late April, early May “used” to be my time for Stream fishing. The weather has blown most of April/May. Please enlighten us on your opinion.

The small numbers of Dolphin being caught is due to "environmental(climate) change or poor fishing technique.
I’m interested in your thought process on the environmental issue.
Thought process ==> many creatures are here that aren’t usually here. Some creatures are not here that usually are… Does that sound like “fishing pressure”? Or does that sound like something else?
I didn’t say anything about “climate change”. The ocean is an ever changing beast. We’ve had years where yellowfin tunas are here. We’ve had years where you could walk across the sailfish. We’ve had years where you could blister the dolphin into July. Now, marlin are showing up in record numbers. Some years are marked by large dolphin. Some years are marked by small dolphin. Some years white marlin are more prominent than others.
Again, just because fish don’t show up, doesn’t always mean “fishing pressure”.
quote:Appreciate the response. I don't know what to think. It is ever changing and I look forward to reading reports. As far as the pilot whales and Leatherbacks, I don't find that out of the ordinary. It was a mild winter and question the migration patterns might be altered by that. We'll see.

I’ve have all the dolphin I can handle from 2 trips. Gonna be gifting out the fish from the next trips.

A boat reported seeing 8 leatherbacks in one trip the other day. How often you YOU actually see leatherbacks out there? We saw one last time I went as well. They are fairly rare. I bet lots of others have seen them this year and have not reported it.
Florida caught all our dolphin
SAFMC you suck!

Is there any chance that some of you are over thinking the lack of dolphin? Look at the last five shrimping seasons…some great…some stink. Same with duck season, flounder gigging, crabbing, etc.
You cannot have a stellar harvest EVERY year. It is that simple.
Sure there may be something causing it…weather, migration, Trump. Who knows. Next spring you will probably think back about these posts and laugh as you wonder who the hell is going to clean all of those fish in the box.
Tight lines.
Yeah it’s hard to say. I’ve seen more billfish more turtles and whales. Saw a sunfish on Tuesday. If you look at something like the trout reds and flounder inshore, populations are good. The reds were slaughtered back in the day. Lower slot limit size and more catch and release helped a ton. The trout and flounder limit has been ab the same. It didn’t take any regulation changes just a couple mild winters and those populations skyrocketed. Look at red snapper and Black Sea bass. They changed laws on those and you can’t keep them off a hook. The lack of a cobia season will help that fishery. It’s my belief angling pressure plays a big part in fish numbers although it’s not the only thing at play. Especially with migratory fish. Dolphin grow fast. We need a larger minimum size limit and 30 fish/boat. Just my opinion. I would rather get knocked down by slingers all day than clear lines of weeds and catch two fish.
I’m going to buy jws a few beers and score some fish…zero fuel burned.
Over 25 years I have seen dramatic decreases in the fish offshore here, but I have seen some increases as well. Billfish have increased since the 90s - due to conservation. Dolphin have decreased a lot in the last 10 years, mostly due a lack of conservation. You may disagree, but you will not convince me other wise.
The 10 per person limit is a joke for this reason: if people are not regularly catching their limit, then there really is no limit. I have asked SAFMC to lower this to 6 per person/36 per vessel. This would tremendously protect the fishery, and should increase numbers. SAFMC won’t do anything until enough people also complain about the lack of fish. What worries me is (like BSB…) they will do nothing until the stock is in really bad shape and then introduce some draconian measure. Trying to get some better dolphin conservation measures for the next 10 years is a pretty smart idea.
