I would love to tell you, but I don’t know that pier. I’ve never fished there. I know people catch reds, trout, flounder and sheepshead there.
If the boys wanna catch sheepshead then work live fiddler crabs up and down by the pier posts. Or maybe oysters or clams if you have them.
Live minnows or finger mullet on carolina rigs will work for reds, flounder & trout.
Shrimp should catch all of the above as well.
If I were rigging every kids’ rod the same way I’d just set them up with carolina rigs and put something live on each. They’ll come up with some fun catches that way I’m sure.

The best fish there is sheep head fishing. Jig the lightest 12 inch Carolina rig you can close as possible to the pilings. If your losing crabs its a good sign, my technique for sheep head is to lightly and slowly jig up and down like 6inches at a rhythm that feels natural to my arm, jig it from the bottom to the top if you feel any weight on your line set the hook. The other way is a popping cork or Carolina rig with mud minnows or finger mullet fished on the side opposite of the bridge on low incoming mid way down the pier toward the end and when the tide is up further in up toward the marsh line is good. Patience and persistence will produce a decent fish, there are good fish there it is just usually slow. Look up jigging jerry and maybe contact him, him and a few others out their that are regulars that will definitely help you, the regulars out there are nice people.

how many boyscouts are going to be out there? enough to crowd the whole pier?

I fish to leave the rest of the world behind. I fish because I respect the fish. I fish because it’s in my DNA.

Whoever put the fishing logistics togther for the scouts event did not do a very good job. kids running around all over the place throwing frozen shrimp on 4/0+ hooks clueless parents looking for direction I’m sure a lot of the kids still had a great time but a few small changes would have gone a long way. I swapped out hooks for quite a few kids and they immediately started catching fish

NC state Im with ya on the clueless parents. I was there with our guys and had to change hooks and take fish off hooks etc…It was a good time if youre in to catching Pin fish! A few decent fish were caught, im glad the boys were out there learning and having a good time instead of sitting inside playing video games!!
