Seabrook Surf Fishing Advice

I’ll be on Seabrook next week and will be doing some surf fishing. I’m a novice, but determination usually helps me to land some fish. What is biting? What rigs, bait to use? Also, curious, I have some fresh water lures I’ll never use for Musky…any chance I may hook something? Saw the Trout Tricks lure and couldn’t help but think it looks like something I’d bass fish with. I may go out from Bohicket but it depends upon the PGA crowd…may not be able to get near the marina to take my brother-in-law’s boat out. But…they can’t keep me from the surf!
Thanks and this is a great site.

Since no one has answered, I’d guess you’re all out fishing…so, upon your return any advice?

It can take a while to answer depending on the subject. First is what do you want to target and what gear do you have? You can use your freshwater lures, you will mainly catch trout. You will mainly be using a Carolina or fish finder rig, they are both basically the same thing. You have weight that can slide up and down the line, bead, swivel, 20-30 lb.leader, and a hook( for trout and flounder 1/0 circle hook, for red fish 3/0-5/0). Your primary baits will for trout and flounder will be mud minnows or live shrimp(red fish will take this too). For redfish primarily you will use cut mullet, live mullet, finger mullet( flounder love them!), live blue crab’s, and cut blue crab(all these bait’s will catch shark). I hope this help’s! Other’s will be able to help you out more on your specific location but for now this is just your basic rigging and baits(you can find how to tie, and catch some baitfish on youtube also).

I’m so salt life I sued google earth for giving away all of my fishing spot’s.

Thanks Stuckonland…I’ll be fishing on the south end of Seabrook near the camp. My nephews will be there and I’d love to get them interested in fishing - although they live on Lake Norman and still aren’t hooked…guess they’ve been missing what is in their own backyard. I’ll rig up and be tossing.

Hey. I’ve been visiting Seabrook every summer for about the past 10 years and fishing with my son. If you can do a search under my name, you’ll come up with lots of good advice, including a thread I started when we were there about a month ago. W had our best luck catching nice size sharks and stingrays in the early morning surf, from sunrise until about 2 hours after. Sounds like you are on Pelican Beach near the camp. If so, try walking down the beach (away from the Club) about a half mile farther down - almost but not quite to Privateer Point. Just cast out a little bit and they’ll bite. We used blue crabs for bait - catch them in the surf with a crab net and then chop em up. There are Youtube vids that show you how - cheap and effective! You can also try frozen squid, shrimp or mullet from the shop in Bohicket Marina. Good luck and feel free to post any questions!

Clams - Thanks for your advice and I checked out some of your posts…now to look at youtube. I’m thrilled whenever somethings on the end of my line, but my youngest nephew is always afraid something will pull him in…I’ve caught sharks and rays near the camp before and would love to figure how to hook into something else. I think the fear of the ray and shark may put them off it altogether. My gear is pretty light - 20 lb test on spinning reels…(should I stay home?) or any other ideas welcome and appreciated!!! I’m going to take my salt and fresh-water boxes, so I can try throwing some weird stuff in the surf.

Hmmm…I try to read the SC rule book…but, it just doesn’t have a very good plot and the characters are a little fishy. Well…can any tell me if there are any fish, crab that I can’t use for bait. I’d hate to catch a crab, cut it up, and a game warden wander up and tell me I was in violation and ticket me. I typically catch and release, but sometimes you’re out of bait and something grabs hold of my line that I think looks appetizing as bait.

BTW, anyone had any luck on Seabrook or in the area?

Thanks and I’ve really enjoyed checking out this site!

Blue crabs must be 5" for legal bait size. Quarter of half them up. Menhaden or FM would be your best bet.

Thanks Yakman72! I am SO looking forward to this trip…are we there yet?

Any suggestions for where to buy shrimp (for dinner) and bait on way to Seabrook - coming in from Greenville…and with PGA tourney I don’t want to leave once I get there!

Just returned from a fabulous week at Seabrook…fished a little on Monday afternoon and caught a few whiting just North of the Clubhouse. On Tuesday I fished most of the day at the Pelican Villas and best was a 20" Ladyfish  plus some Whiting. Rest of the week was mostly some whiting and 1 small blue, although I learned to cast a net and used some of the finger mullet (I think) as bait and something bit one in half and then took it to the head on the next cast. Never saw what it was but it was a nice tug. Weather on Fri. was just so rough - high winds and surf beat us to death and my sister landed only 3 whiting. We fed some bait to the fish, so they should be a little larger on our next visit. Thanks for all the advice!
