Question::: How do you know what your gonna catch, if you release three reds and that is the limit, do you stop fishing, or do you try different bait for other types and then if you hook a red do you turn yourself in to DNR for catch and release limit violation? there is no way to control how many you release or to monitor that, so the possession laws have to be enforced, releasing 10 and one or two dies is better than keeping them all, i understand what your saying toppy, but there has to be a check and balance here, and how do you enforce a release law if there is none in the boat, that is where the problem lies, so until DNR comes up with a better law or laws, we have to fly with what we have, i am not trying to be a smart alex but there has to be a way to enforce a law, and unless you havew an officer on your boat counting what you release, there is no way to enforce it, just like the straw argument of driving 55 mph, unless someone can detect the speed you can’t enforce it, have you ever tried to call the state patrol and tell them someone is running 60 in a 55 mph zone , they would laugh at you there is no way at this time to enforce such a law… and toppy i agree with what your saying there is just no way to enforce it
Hey sailsfish…I know you are right about the Oyster thing I was ignorant , dumb and wrong…I apologized and thanked the folks here for tolerating my stupidity…I admit it.
What really upsets me is to kill more than three reds in order to keep three for eating…This is due to the rediculous limits that I am legally required to follow( I know that keeping the first three would preserve more fish)…Then you commercial guys who think you own the ocean jump on me??? If your sole purpose is conservation of reds…why do you guys support unlimited catch and release(NO LIMIT) then knowingly act as if you are not killing some of them just for fun or a dollar.
Anyone knows you are forced by law to release fish that die. to deny this is absurd and dishonest,in fact just telling a lie.
I know that I unintentionally kill too many because of the limits and admit it. be men and be honest

Toppy, you sir are indeed ignorant.
Get your facts straight and come back and let’s start this discussion over.
Some people…
You dont know…Appreciate your comments. It would be up to the sportsmen to honor their claim to preservation.Reds school and have specific areas that you can rape them in…There are so many out there now that relaxing the limits for those that want to eat them would be prudent and honorable…and fair!

I too am curious how long you have been fishing here Toppy. I refrained from getting into this debate, but am having a hard time understanding where you are coming from. The limits that are in effect now are working, whether you release or keep your fish. I was around in the 70’s where people kept everything they caught and to say the lack of redfish during the 80’s was due strictly to commercial fishing is not paying attention to how much impact recreational fisherman can have on a species. The idea that people should stop once they have caught 3 fish is not grounded in anything scientific. Keep three big fish over 26" and you have impacted the breeding population. The fishery we now have for redfish is light years beyond what we had 20 years ago. I don’t fish to make sure I can feed my family, there are much more economical ways to do this if that is your main goal. In the same token I do not judge anyone if they want to keep their legal limit. You seem to have a us vs. them mentality when it comes to guides. Not sure why, but I can tell you most that I know are good guys, sure just like everything there are some bad apples, but as a whole they are a professional group. The release mortality on redfish is very low if you properly handle the fish. I am also confused by who you are referring to as “commercial guys” that keep bashing you. Most of the guys posting in this thread do not fish for a living, they are guys that have been around in Charleston a long time and understand that the number of people fishing has grown exponentially and the only thing that keeps the redfish population strong in conservation minded anglers and the “ridiculous limits”. Take a deep breath keep your three fish limit when you go and know that the limits that are in place now are working and working quite well, whether the fish are kept or 50 are released in one trip.
and while the weather is bad and i am back on the soapbox, , the member “tree my dog,” if you go back and read his post , i mean all of his 99 post in the different forums you might have a different view of him, i have never met the man nor have i had a conversation with him, but i did go back and read his other posts and he made it clear in other forums that he does not keep reds because he does not like the taste of them and he is very clear about that, and he has been helpful to others in giving great direction about fishing techniques and what to look for, as well as in hunting forums,he knows what he is talking about when it comes to techniques and he has posted a pic showing that (all legal and under limit)and he has even congratulated many of you on your fishing accomplishments, was he just trying to get attention, i don’t think so ,i think we just read too much into what he said in this thread, and took it personal, and if you go back and read what he said in this thread you will see that he was making a point that it was not anyone’s business if he caught 5 or 50 reds,(and that was because we made a stir of the one fish over on the stringer) and that he was not a snitch or narc on fellow anglers, but he never encouraged us to break the law, nor did he say that he did, and he did not try to encourage us to keep under or over size fish or to keep over the limit, , so maybe we should try to find out more about someone before we condemn them simply because he has an opposing opinion on something, even if we feel strongly about it, that does not make it right…on either side, yes his good night wish was a little rough to swallow but i am sure he was not a happy camper with what was being said about him, but from his past posts he appears very knowledgeable about the outdoors, so i had rather have him on my side than against me, just a thought

Ok raddaddy,All my life from Tampa bay to here(46years here).Long enough to know that recreational fishermen that eat what they catch don’t put a dent in the fish population…But we have to pay for commercial harvesters overharvesting and the unlicensed thieves that illegally harvest and sell.Regulate the big harvesters and prosecute the unlicensed guys that catch and sell for money…hell, make it a state and federal felony to buy seafood from unlicensed harvesters.BUT no!! lets punish the little guy who is not the problem…What is truly IGNORANT is denial…

toppy, in you opinion what do you think would be a fair and balanced and enforceable law on reds, and what do you think is fair on black sea bass,

Even though you could say he was joking, I dont think this is an appropriate thing to say, suggesting violence and damage to property against someone they disagree with. Might have to rethink your opinion of the guy. This is grounds to be banned from the forum IMO.
and you can have that opinion and i respect it, i do not agree with it but respect it, now on to bigger and better things, i am dumb on this point but are there commercial fishermen that target redfish and is there a market for them?

This is why people are responding to you like they are. You prove time and time again that you are ignorant on most subjects concerning any fishery, whether it be oysters or red drum.
Pay attention here please. There is no commercial harvest of redfish here. It’s not legal in Georgia nor Florida either. These three states consider the red drum a game fish and therefore you cannot commercially harvest.
Great suggestion, but it’s already illegal to catch and sell red drum in South Carolina.
If you are caught fishing without the proper license, it’s a maximum of $500 fine.
Educate yourself, take a deep breath, and come back here and we can talk intelligently. Until then, you’re just making yourself look silly…again.
Okay… 46 years of inshore fishing experience around here. In your many years of experience around here, how would you rate redfish stocks now in the areas you regularly fish as compared to 46 years ago; on the rise, declining, or holding steady?

Toppy just stop buddy…I don’t get into these long winded things but man you are out of this world with you logic and a little entertaining. Do us all a favor and move back to Tampa.
Family and I go to Destin Florida on the panhandle every year for vacation. We like to hit local fresh seafood stores for blue crabs. This year two stores selling redfish for 28.00 a pound .I ask if this is a fish also called spot tail bass and my reply was yes? I thought it was illegal to sell redfish and these were well established , been there many years on main strip seafood stores. We fish the beaches there and do well with catching bull reds in August and I can assure you dnr is out there every night checking catches. This year I’ll ask one unless someone from Florida knows answer?

In my defense he was gonna call the game Warden on me. And holes in the the boat is the price for that. And I hate politically correctness and I always will. If you get your panties in a wad over what I say I really dont care. Yall are like a pack of coyotes with a rabbit in the corner. Im just trying to help the rabbit from getting slaughtered.

So someone calling DNR on you warrants shooting their boat? That’s mature. Of course you lost any credibility when you resorted to calling everyone “pricks”. You can’t engage in a mature discussion when you resort to middle school name-calling.
“Apathy is the Glove in Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”.
They are getting the fish from North Carolina which still allows commercial fishing for redfish and trout. To my knowledge, they are the only state left that allows such a practice.

First 6 caught between 12 and 27 inches…Only 6 catch and release per person(FAIR IS FAIR) Eliminate sportfishing specifically for the breeder bulls.Eliminate sale of all reds and require any commercial bycatch of reds to be both reported and returned to the water(dead or alive)
Nothing is enforceable 100%.Honoring limits by true sportsmen doesn’t need enforcement…I have done a little research and the redfish population has rebounded nicely…One of the arguements for imposing the limits was so that the restrictions could be eased(not eliminated) when this occured…It is time to do just that…My biggest “real” and honest point is that I truly believe the current limit/size restrictions actually force me to kill more than I keep because there are so many just below and just above the size limit.
When a law becomes obsolete and in fact counterproductive,it should be changed…Once again, these restrictive limits result in me killing more than allowed to keep and that is reality.
It has been that way for the last 4 or 5 years ( that way being plenty of reds)…I believe it is mostly due to president George W Bush declaring the Red Drum a protective species and issuing Executive Order number 13449 in October 20 2007 which prohibits the sale of red fish caught in federal waters from 3 to 200 miles offshore.
Long gone are the days when you could catch coolers of puppy drums and sell to local seafood dealers and it should stay that way…
I still maintain that stopping the wholesale raping of large offshore schools is what caused the rebound. That coupled with state laws limiting commercial taking of breeders and declaring them “game fish” is why we see much better populations.
