SEC Defenses....

Soo…obviously the SEC always have had awesome D’s but was it party because nobody spread it out and ran hurry up offenses like UGA, TAMU & LSU are doing now?

Was it because the SEC didn’t have really good QB’s up until the last year or two?

Or am I reaching?

I was thinking the same thing. But who knows. some games are high scoring some are not.

oh and yes, you are reaching.

I think you are reaching. I think the SEC defenses just aren’t as good this year as they were. Auburn kept Oregon to 19 points in 2011, Bama kept Texas to 21 points in 2010. Florida kept Oklahoma to 14 points in 2009 so they have seen these offenses before.

CFB is cyclical, offensive coordinators spend time coming up with new schemes and plays to beat defenses. Defensive Coordinators then work to counter those new formations and plays but it takes a while to get film on all the new stuff. Even in the SEC, they saw what Sumlin did against Bama last year and more and more have gone to it, won’t be long before the balance swings back to the middle but for the time being get use to high scoring games when Up-tempo offenses with good players are on the field.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

OU was without thier top RB ( Demarco Murray). That made a huge difference. Losing a 1000 yd + back is huge before a NC game don’t ya think?
Also, Texas was moving the ball with MC Coy and then he goes down and out with an injury so the jury’s still out on that one too.

In addition, Texas A&M was built in the spread formation heavy Big 12. Kevin Sumlin was the recievers coach at OU prior to becoming a HC. In thier very 1st year in the defensive minded SEC , A&M set the all time record for yards in a season. Then they come in a put 42 on the “genious” of defense, Nick Saban this year. Sure, give the SEC defensive coordinators a month or even sometimes the whole offseason to prepare for a game ( ie, NC or the first game of the next season), and they have a great gameplan. Put them in a situation where they face that type of offense every week in conference and see how the defense looks. That’s what is happening now with the introduction of that style of offense in the SEC.

SEC has more parity to it now. And yes you are reaching but what else is new?

It is what it is!

Someone write this down.
I agree with ole salty on this one.

ALL I know is they didn’t score many points in any of those games.

Texas A&M only played 3 teams that had a defense last year, Florida, LSU, and Bama. They got the best of Bama (29 points), but Florida (17 points) and LSU (19 points) stopped them and won. Care to guess the point average against the rest of the competition? It was 51.3 points a game. They probably racked up a lot of yards in those games, ya think?

This year, as stated, defenses are down. I think it is funny you poke fun at the “genius” of a Saban defense. He has only won 3 NC in the last 4 years with another one coming this year with those defenses!

As far as the preparation time. Any team that wants to win the NC will have to play a team that has a month to prepare for them. Surely the “genius” offensive coordinators can scheme something against the defenses in that amount of time that will win it!

Oregon is the epitome of these offenses and they have floundered every time they have played a team that is considered to have a great defense, even during the regular season. Usually, it is just a good defense.

Looks like Bob Stoops was reaching too.

In an interview where Oklahoma Sooners head football coach Bob Stoops was asked about the state of the Big 12, he took the opportunity to take a shot at the SEC.

“A few years ago we [the Big 12] had all the quarterbacks and now all of a sudden we can play a little better defense and some other people can’t play defense,” said Stoops. “Funny how people can’t play defense when there’s finally good pro-style quarterbacks over there.”

“How’s that happening playing all those SEC defenses?” Stoops asked the reporters. "I still don’t know how A&M was third in the country in total offense and scoring offense playing all those SEC defenses. I have no idea how that happened.

"Oh, they’ve got a quarterback, that’s right.

Although I think there is something to it, but consider that Murray, Mcarron, mettenburger, shaw are all seniors. I wouldn’t say “finally good” pro-style QBs. But does that mean the QB play is that much better or the defense that bad. Next year the QB level should be lower in the SEC just do to experience.
Like salty said above, it is cyclical.

Not hardly. Now that the SEC actually has teams with high powered offenses lead by legitimate QB’s, it’s become difficult to defense week in and week out. Manziel, Murray, Mettenberger are all very skilled Qb’s and are basically playing in offenses that resemble Big 12 offenses of the past 5-6 years. Alabama is finally having to face teams in it’s own conference that have superstar talent at the QB position and it’s been difficult when you don’t have months to prepare for a single opponent with a top 5 draft pick QB at the helm. To say the SEC defenses are “down” is ridiculous. So I guess the defensive players are all down with the “flu”, huh? Laughable.
