I have been thinking about getting a gun in this range, but everyone has an AR. I kinda want something different. I get to shoot ARs whenever I like. If you were to get something in the 5.56/NATO/.223 arena and not an AR, what would it be?
My primary intent is for target shooting out in the country. Maybe small game hunting, but that will be a rare occasion. I have plenty for home defense, and don’t need this to fill that role.
I’ve been entertaining the ideas of a Benelli MR1, but reviews are mixed its seems. I also like a few of the AK47s. The reliability is what impresses me most with that platform. I don’t want to go over $1500. What say you?
If you don’t want an AR to shoot .223/5.56 then get a bolt gun that does. If not, stick to the AR platform, parts and mods are easy to do, you can sell it easier than some off the wall gun, they are reliable and accurate. Nothing worse than having a gun that you decide you don’t like or really want that isn’t popular and trying to get rid of it and not taking a big loss.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

If you want the .223 cartridge, I would stick with an AR platform.
However, not all black guns have to be the tacticool home defense guns you see everyone else with.
If it were me, I would either buy, or build a top of the line .223 with a target barrel for varmint hunting, and target shooting 300-500 yds. Get an upgraded trigger, and a good barrel.
Personally I like the .308 cartridge for distance, and the 7.62x39 for blasting within 100 yds. AK’s and Ruger Mini 30’s are fun guns that are not the standard black AR you see all over the range.
With that said, if I had $1500 burning a hole in my pocket, I would probably buy a Springfield M1A. Either new, or a used one in good shape.
I was at the SCACA gun show this weekend and saw plenty of bolt action .223s. Nice looking wood stocks, some already with a mounted scope. Or try 7.62x39 with an SKS. Not the SKS’s all bubba-ed up with aftermarket pistol gripped stocks and high capacity mags. Try an SKS in the original rifle set-up with the ten round fixed magazine, preferably one in good condition. Fun, and cheap, to shoot.
Also, Saiga makes a .223 with a standard rifle stock. But it uses only Saiga mags which can be expensive.
Quality control issues from what I understand 50/50 odds on getting a fully functional firearm. Inter Ordnance has been around since 2008 I think and as of the last few years I’ve heard there has been quite a lot of QC issues with them. If you can find a Norinco 56s AK47 that would be the way to go in my opinion. Check out http://www.sturmgewehr.com/webBBS/semi4sale.cgi they show up on here regularly.
For $1500 you could probably walk into PSA and but a 300 blackout and a suppressor. That’s not your typical AR and would be really fun to shoot and kill hogs and yotes.

Talked to the guys at Carolina rod and gun yesterday. They recommended IO and said to stay away from Century Arms, that century was the one with QC issues. IO manufactures right there in Florida. Palm Beach I believe.
Who would be the best shop to talk to locally about options?
