Shark fishing, Cherry Grove

Plan to do a little attempt at catching a shark from Surf. Never targeted sharks before just caught my fair share not trying. Any particular rigging style or bait to use? I’m looking to catch something with some size. I picked up some 7/0 Mustad J hooks. They looked big enough without going too big for a smaller fish. Any tips are appreciated. Going in 6 days.

I would go up to Sunset Beach, NC or down to Georgetown Cty. No shark fishing allowed in Horry Cty. Poe-Poe will give you greef over it!

Didn’t know that. How would they know what I’m really targeting? I’ll be using a spinning combo.

best to just take the advice and not do it.

I say fish there, just say your fishing for tarpon and large red drum.

If a swimmer complains about you fishing on the beach you’ll be told to stop fishing by a beach patrol officer. The voice of experience.

I’d rather fish than eat.

So is there “no” fishing from the surf in this area? Not a big deal b/c we have a huge private pier that’s only for our condos to fish from as well just trying to fish and spend time w/ fam on the beach at the same time.

If you steer clear of the bigger resorts you’ll be okay and it’s still early in the year. I was fishing near a holiday.

With a spinner off a private pier just don’t tell you are shark fishing or be chumming. I big chunk of bait on a fishfinder rig - yea I’m fishing for drum. Should be ok. A 12/0+ reel and a 16/0 hook you will not get out of it.

I always put out one big bait for whatever every time I go though, most of the fish come on the smaller rod and smaller rig/baits.

During the summer the swimmers have the right of way. Fishing you have to go where nobody is at. Sucks but, it’s MB. That’s why when I stayed there I went north or south to fish. If you catch one by accident on a pay pier you are not suppose to bring them over the rail.

go to new jersey where you belong. plenty of shaaaks up there.

OUR GOVERNMENT HAS BECOME THE ENEMY OF FREEDOM.

Never been north of Virginia and that was on accident, sorry bud. In cherry grove where I’m at there isn’t much beach traffic any time of the year so I should be fine. I’m going to bring a cast net and may go to the feeder creeks seeing if I can find some livies.

Horry County shark fishing ban - http://www.horrycounty.org/ordinances/BeachOrdinance.pdf

The thing that has always cracked me up in all my years of sharking is that here these yahoos who make up these ridiculous ordinances haven’t a clue. Ofcourse some of the idiots that come out with no knowledge of what they are doingto fish for them are just as much to blame for the black eye the sport gets. So I guess based on the wording of the ordinance, ( which has been updated a bit since I first researched it in the early 80’s), you really can’t land anything with teeth. Teeth are “dangerous”, aren’t they? So landing Kings, spanish, bluefish, ribbonfish, trout etc. are, technically, illegal. Think if I was in my younger days of beach sharkin I’d challenge it. I 'd simply wait for an unsuspecting fisherman to land a bluefish on the beach in Horry co., and call the cops. They’d have no choice but to make an arrest since bluefish have been responsible for bites on both swimmers and fishermen.

reading that ordinance looks like its illegal to attempt to attract sharks or other “dangerous” marine life from within a mile of shore. that mean the guy using a gotcha plug from the nearest pier is to blame???

I guess it’s in the eye of the beholder, Ohio. Another misuse of government at it’s worst. Seriously.
The only point the anti-shark council people have had over the years is, however, that there are those out there that remove all doubt that people can be idiots ( ie; chumming from the beach or pier; tying off shark rigs to pier railings, etc; using mammal blood and parts as bait… etc, etc.). We used to fish Jennettes pier in Nags Head, NC for many years and never had a single issue. Mainly due to the fact that all the guys fished 1) at night when no one was in the water to complain 2) with appropriate fishing gear ( not rope tied to a railing)3) knowledge and respect for the ocean and the fish in it.
We caught many, many large sharkes with some in excess of 700 lbs… These were experienced guys who weren’t out there beating thier chests in front of tourists. In fact, our guys would rather no one have even come along to see what was going on.
This is the way to keep it legal where it still is. That’s why I don’t fish in the day and I keep it on the down low. If people had done that from the start in M.B. it probably would still be legal as no one would be the wiser.

Ya - they caught a world record tiger shark off Cherry grove pier back in the 60’s. People use to chum with blood back in the day. When that fish made the papers the locals flipped out. Jaw’s movies just added fuel to the fire.

i saw that a 1700+lb tiger was caught off cherry grove and yes im with you when going after sharks even though i only really get time to fish much in the day ill try to be as by myself as possible. if i see people swimming or a bunch of paddleboarders, kiteboarders, wind surfers, … there first then i will pick somewhere else and respect their space, however it never ceases to amuse me that many times ill be practically the only one near the water aside from people walking or jogging for over an hour, yet almost like clockwork along comes someone with a paddleboard or something else and just has to put in 30 feet from my stuff even though the rest of the beach has nobody there and get confused looks from people when i politely tell them to watch out for my lines as if they didnt notice i was right near them. all jokes aside i dont know how i havent reeled in a few paddleboards from under people as close as they get to my lines at times! the word “baitcaster” is not in my vocabulary so its definately not too obvious im shark fishing with heavy spinning gear, but im not playing old man and the sea with a rope tied to a pier either. hopefully nothing goes too bad in charleston county with as many tourists that come here too.

i noticed on dnr’s website that Cherry Grove has a landing dock you can fish off of that is on the marsh type water or what i would consider a small channel. has anyone ever fished it and had any luck. i know in the past when i’ve gone to Edisto that we’ve done pretty well on water like that when the tides moving in and out.
