Shark fishing / Tides

My time to shark fish is limited due to work and family life. Take tonight for example. I have the opportunity to shark fish between maybe 6pm and 11pm. But that is tail end of low tide mostly. I know high tide is typically better time. Is it a waste to go out and try to fish for sharks in a falling tide? Casting only this time around, no paddling baits out. Any thoughts.

Any time is a good time to fish.

agreed areeldrag…but when I’m looking to target sharks 4ft and up I want to go when I have a real chance of doing so. Any experienced based ■■■■■■■■ about shark fishing on the falling tide?

i get most of my runs after the low tide turns around and starts coming in, but any free time i get to fish ill at least try.

I also get most of my bites on the incoming, but it also depends on what stretch of beach you fish also. I have one spot that I fish pretty regularly that is dead from low til two hours into the incoming tide then you better be on your toes but I have another spot not a half mile down the beach that seems to be most active the first three hours into the outgoing. You just have to learn your spot. After a bit you’ll learn when to be out there and where to put your bait. But like navy nuke said anytime you can get out go for it. You never know when something is going to be cruising by .

Good point about the time to fish. I found that fishing off the Broadriver pier in Beaufort is good from 2 hours before high tide to dead tide and then the bite of off after the tide starts going out. In a river the bait fish are drawn out into the river during the outgoing tide. So, on the beach it must be about the same but, probably not as much. And I have found that Sharks like low light conditions so this weekend the high tide is at 3:44PM at the IOP pier and 4:04PM at the IOP Breach Inlet for example. I would think a good time to start at say 3rd Ave area would be at about 2:00 PM and try until dusk. The bite should be a enhanced by the sun going down in the evening and you would have been chuming for a couple of hours to.

add another one to my hour after low tide count! 7 foot sandbar tonight!

One hour after low tide would be about 11:00 PM. Funny how that works but the only thing that is in common with what I said in my previous post was the low light condition. So for you, is the night hours more productive then the day hours when it comes to giants like these? Or is more that you are able to get to deeper water that might have these big bruisers in them? Seems like all the smaller sharks are nearer to the shore during the day. Also, did you kayak that bait out there and how far out did you drop it? Was part of the beach were you at? That is a quality shark catch and nice catch!

actually that shark is from crooked river, georgia and i hooked it at about 1am last night. i dropped a king mackerel head about 50 yards out and id say the water is about 15 - 20 feet deep at that point, however ive also caught 5+ foot sullivans island sharks in chest deep water with a casted whole, live mullet from the beach on spinning gear too. ive hooked sharks during daytime hours for sure, but dawn/dusk seems to give me my most runs. thats my first big one at night and i still have a lot to learn shark fishing myself but keep at it and youll get bigger runs!

At crooked river!? I lived in kings bay for years and never knew you could pull sharks in from there.

yup crooked river state park maybe 100 yards from the ramp! i heard people at the ramp talk about them, caught a couple baby ones on squid intended for whiting, saw someone get a 7 foot sandbar right off the dock that i landed for him, then finally got one of my own. i saw the guy i landed ones friend there last night and said he caught an 8 foot bull before i got there that night.

Nice OhioNavy! I live right near the Stono. Can see it from my front porch. I have access to the water right under the John Limehouse bridge. Anyone know if I could catch sharks there?

that one was about 10-15 miles inland from the ocean so although i never fished the stono, id have to imagine some might swim up around the mouth or near it. get some big baits and give it a try ya never know!

Finally got a shark. Not very big but its a good start. Caught him on the incoming Saturday night. I was pretty stoked. Only thing that killed my stoke is that I must have screwed up the release cause he washed up onshore down the beach about 30 yards. The tide was all the way up and the waves were crashing on the shore. I should have walked him out and revived him. I tried to revive him, but a wave hammered me and I let him go. He swam and hit my leg so I thought all was good. Bummed to kill a beautiful fish for no reason :frowning: Won’t make the same mistake twice!
