Sharky Beach

went surf and pier fishing at folly beach today and caught 12 juvenile black tips. There were only two decent size whiting caught on the pier in a 3 hour span. WHERE ARE THE FISH! It’s been kind of dead everywhere.

beach re-nourishment kills the fishing for a good while.

A bunch of those little Blacktips was all I caught fishing the north end of Folly Saturday afternoon. I did see several over the slot Reds caught by a couple other guys, but none for me. I was reading back in my fishing log book from last April and May and I had several really good trips, but so far this year it’s pretty slow.

It’s that time of year. Baby sharks everywhere. Little bit of useless knowledge though. If it was the little guys that are around a foot long and skinny, those are juvenile sharpnose sharks.they are everywhere right now since the adults have come from offshore to spawn. They can be confused as black tips since thet have black fin tips but, newborn black tips are 18-24 inches when born and stout for their size. If it was baby black tips then my bad but the little sharpnoses are in the surf in full force right now and will be for a while. At least ya caught something though

Guys,
When those baby sharpnose are thick put one on a big circle hook. Hook it through the head and butterfly it from the tail midway through the body so both sides flap in the water. Cast that out behind the breakers and hang on! :sunglasses:

I wasn’t going to say that but yeah, they work great and like killinr said hang on and have some stout tackle. I’ve lost several monsters on 50 class spinning gear using those guys for bait.

Good info, I wanted to try and use one for cut bait but didn’t know if it would catch anything.

Good info Gentlemen, thanks.

Yes, I have used the little guys as bait before and have had success, but butterflying them is I must say brilliant thanks for sharing that killer Captain never heard that one before I will try soon as Im going to hilton head with family, mom rented a house to get every body together. Do you pull out guts or leave them in? Thanks for sharing not everybody willing to help with knowledge like that especially someone who makes a living off the same trade says something about you.

I was at the pier fishing about a week ago lots of blue fish about 13 inches and whiting about 8 or 9 and full size sharp nose and baby sharks. Blue fish where caught on a custom made 5 hook sabiki rig with 2-3 inch mullets on them. Fished low incoming tide, and the fish didn’t bite to mid tide rising but kept biting until I left at nearly high tide.

BOATLESS

Caught 6 sharpies and 1 bonnie in just over an hour at Morris Island on Sunday using live menhaden that I bagged in the cast net. The white spots on the sharpnoses are dead giveaways to species identification. I’ve also caught bonnetheads that were covered in little black freckles.
