Sheepshead Fishing

I am looking for some info on where to fish inshore for sheepshead this weekend in the Beaufort area? I will be in a small boat and can trailer to any ramp. Thanks.

You might try the Archer’s creek bridge if the firing range isn’t hot.

Oyster Cracker,
Not trying to hijack the OP’s thread, but isn’t that creek only open on Sunday? Or is there another way to know if it’s okay to pass through? I thought there might be a number you could call to get permission, but I haven’t found one. Any insight would be appreciated.

They fly a flag when they are shooting… As well as Marines patrolling the river in boats. Get close enough to the mouth of archers and you will know wether they are shooting or not. They will be on you like white on rice.

Thanks for the replies. So, if they aren’t patrolling and the flag isn’t flying, is it okay to use the creek at any time?

Yep, they will let you know if you aren’t welcome. Just say “yes sir, no sir, thank you very much”. They haven’t shot me yet

Larry I had been eye balling a big school of reds on that flat. One morning I came cruising up to the patrol boat and it was anchored out (thought that was weird). So I peeked over the rail and two of the MPs were covered up under tarps sleeping. So naturally I pulled up on the flat and threw the trolling motor out. Fished for about an hour and a big siren went off bunch of yelling on an intercom on the range. Sirens went off on the patrol boat and they came flying over towards me. Jammed the big center console up on the flat (stuck). So I ran right past them with the trolling motor. They weren’t happy with me and didn’t ask for a tow off the flat so I fired up the big motor and hauled @ss. Left them sitting there stuck lol.

Adam, I would have threw them a line, towed them off and posted their picture on the Internet:smiley: I’d love to have a pic of a USMC RIB behind my towline

Seriously though, they have a job to do and do it well.

Yes they do… I couldn’t believe they were sleeping tho. Pretty crazy! I am sure their CO was not happy about that.

I’m gonna give you a pro tip on sheepshead fishing since your thread got hi jacked. Not going to be specific on where but will tell you how to find them. Ride around at dead low tide and look for dock pilings with barnacles eaten off. Might sound like BS but they don’t eat at every dock they target certain ones. Mark the docks that have patches of barnacles missing and come back and fish this docks. Out of 20 docks they may only be eating on 4 or 5. Good luck!

Thanks to everyone for the information on sheepshead and Archers creek.

Hey XX…do you do your scouting on docks before you go out fishing? Any patterns to the docks they seem to like?

I love catching sheepshead. Haven’t been able to get them to bite at the reefs this spring, though.

Not really… The more pilings the better. Sometimes docks have pilings that are old and they just drive new ones right beside them. = twice the barnacles. Also creeks with trees that fall into the edge over the years will hold sheeps as well. The key is fishing closer to your tide changes. Water is not flowing and gives them a better chance to munch on the structure. Just like anything else when the tide goes slack the bite seems to stop just as soon so it starts to turn they pick back up. I tend to fish the wrecks more around Nov, Dec as soon as Jan, Feb roll around I start hitting them inshore. I had one of my best days inshore in Feb caught 67. Most folks think they ALL migrate offshore that’s just not true.

If you are coming from the Beaufort side of Archers creek you can fish the bridge. They just will not let you past the bridge if they are firing. I worked on the base for about 2 years.

Last week I checked on the HHI side, nobody had any. I was wanting to use them for reds up in the grass. I didn’t see any reds either!
