Sheepshead Question

In the past week or so someone posted on the Edisto forum about some sheepshead tactics this time of year. I usually target reds and trout and have never fished for the sheepies. I do recall several times in the heat of the summer when fishing docks, seeing huge sheepshead coming to the top of the water and eating barnicles off the docks. It seems like everytime this happened I never had a rod rigged to target them. That will change next summer, I’ll make sure I carry a few fiddlers with me and have a rod rigged just in case.

With that being said it seems that the trout and red bite has slowed at Edisto or at least what I’m reading on these forums. Is this a better time to target sheeps and if so, where? docks, pilings? on the bottom? not really sure. My 17 foot boat is at the beach and I plan on fishing out of it. I have a bigger boat at home that I will run to the 60, but I like to stay inshore with the 17’ter.

Also, I think someone suggested one time that you use a smaller hook with these guys as well, like a bream hook.

Any advice is appreciated. At the least I"m going to try and get out Friday afternoon and may be back out Saturday as well.

They are out there now for sure. Jetties, pilings, rocks etc. As for tactics, wish I could help!! I am the worst sheepshead fisher ever born lol!! If you feel the bump, too late. I dont know how many times I have wanted to throw my rod in the water lmao. So now I dont even try he he. But I wish you better than my luck! You may have the touch that I dont lol. One thing I have heard that may help,if your fishing the dock pilings, scrape some of them barnicles loose in the water. Think of it as chum lol.
Cheers

THE OCEAN IS NOT YOUR SWIMMING POOL!!!

Is there anywhere in Edisto to get fiddlers? I’d rather not have to go scurrying through the mud trying to catch them myself. If not, is there any other bait that will work?
