Sheepshead

Looking to educate myself a little on sheepshead from some of the professinals on here. I fish most for reds and trout from my kayak but would love to get after some sheepshead. I know they move out to sea when spawning but was wondering when they move back in to the rivers and deep creeks. Thanks much!!

Not a professional, just a recreational shmoe, but here is my two cents. They are in the creeks now for sure. I caught a 13 and 15 inch the other day. Find any structure in the creeks like down trees etc and you will find sheepshead. We fish for them with only splitshots for weights as they will nibble off your fiddler crabs without you knowing it. If you can find some barnacles to shave and chum with you will increase your audience.

Thank you much digger54, I fish around the whale branch area and know of a few spots I hope will hold some sheepshead. Getting out next friday and saterday (whether permit) to give it a try. Thanks again for your help.

I’d nose around the Hwy21 bridge pilings. If you have room on your yak for a small flat spade shovel that would be choice for shaving the piling barnacles loose as chum. Highway noise might start to get annoying after a while though.

I fish there often, trolling rattle traps and bucktails. No luck with flounders yet. But I do well with trout and the famous rays. I’ve noticed a lot of dolphins troll that area as well. There’s also good red fishing near by. (Hints the dolphins like to hangout close by).
