Shh the seasons coming

Time to gear up for the big reds…

I’m getting itchy, real itchy. Can’t wait to catch some big fish, I haven’t got one since December. I got a few items to prepare. The Dexter tiger edge is supposed to cut frozen bait, cartilage and bone for those big baits users. The handle feels good and it seems powerful like it can cut some tough stuff. Cut resistant gloves and new leader making materials. These hooks are stock and would give them 4 of 10 but when modified they are 10 of 10. What ever your target is its time to get your gear in order and knock the dust off it.

What do you do to the hooks that makes them twice as good as the manufacturer?

These hooks are mass produced and the barbs are way to big and the hook is bent to far in. A hook with giant barbs does more damage and is harder to pull out causing more stress than necessary. You can buy hooks that are already close to perfect but they are expensive. These are about a 8th the price and my line pops long before my rigs or hooks fail. I haven’t gut hooked 1 fish with the moded version and circles will gut hook sometimes and the tip bent to far in has a lower hook up ratio and can be a pain to turn the hook enough to dehook quickly or really get wrapped around the jaw bone making it hard to dehook. I’ve tried and tested all the major brands and styles of circle hooks. The best big production hook is the owner grander or super mutu 16/0 its tues size of most 20/0. When modified these perform better. I haven’t gut hooked once with these and majority are in the corner in the roof of the mouth and pop out real easy. There is also a secret to hooking your bait that I discovered and have had a 100 percent ratio since the new hooking style, hook mod and the new way I set the hook.

40 what is your method for baiting the hook. Do you leave the point exposed? I also just picked up a dexter filet knife recently. Allot of profesional kitchens use them. They have a nice textured handle to prevent slippage. I see you have the stout saw version it will serve you well for breaking down those rays with the tough skin. Good luck this year.

Fish eat different baits different ways so I hook them how they would naturally attack them and just barely hook it enough so it stays on the hook. Then I use a extra long rig like a 40ftr and let them run and slowly set the drag from lite to max to set the hook. When you give them max drag and they pull you know you hooked a good one. Just got her today. Feels nice but wish it had a round handle. It was hard to find a bad word on the bg so hopefully she lives up to the expectations.

I bought a BG8000 last year for sharks off the beach. It’s been a great reel, although I haven’t hooked into anything that didn’t stop in it’s tracks when I put the heat on haha. Hope to change that soon.

Just made my shark rigs the other day. Last year i went heavier with 12/0 and 16/0 circles. I missed alot of sharks so i am going to go smaller this year. Im using 7/0 and 10/0 mustad demon perfect circle offset 3xstrong hooks with 270lb cable and 250lb mono leader. 300lb barrels. I liked my daiwa bg8000 but it tipped over into the sand last year and hasnt been the same since then.

Steve those 10/0 demons are great hooks, that’s exactly what I use on all my casted baits. If you’re missing a lot of fish, I would consider downsizing the bait a little. Although you definitely can reach big fish within casting distance, a lot of your fish are going to be on the smaller side. Even though a big tipper would prefer a whole whiting, he isn’t gonna pass a chunk up either. That said, if you’re trying to eliminate catching smaller fish big bait is the way to go, just know you’re gonna miss some fish.

20 bucks with shipping the big pile was what I ordered, little pile was free. Wish the legs were longer but this was a test order.
Follys got a lot of little sharks catch a sharpnose cut its head off behind the gills and hook it shallow through the gill end so you can pull your hook out easily. Like just enough to cast it. This will eliminate most small sharks under 4ft from stealing your bait. If its to much to cast just use the gill section. If a smedium shark is around he’ll find it.

Where did you get 10 8oz spiders for 20$ let me know so i can order some.

Ebay, type in spider surf weights there are 2 people that sell them cheap. The one guys are just a notch more but have longer stiffer legs, but these should be fine. I just like a longer, larger claw to catch the bottom better. New paddle too so my bs cheapo lifetime paddle from my starter yak will be a back up and this should be a big improvement in performance.

I can vouch for the authenticity of the spider weight rigs from eBay. The 4 oz always hold. Never have not held at the beach. You can always message the seller and ask him to mix it up for ya. I got two 4oz and two 6oz and never even have got the 6’s wet.

Slap full of 80lb pp put on with about 25 lbs of pressure. Rock solid spool and i probably got 450ydsish.

Just got these in today. Each leg folds independently. The ones i was using had the plastic beads that came out of the sand way to easily. These clips hold the legs down snug and will need a good yanking to pull out of the sand. And if its not holding well enough you can push those black rubber stops down on the legs to hold in the clip better.

Also 40inchreds i saw those on ebay and asked the guy to make me the 8oz ones with 6inch claws and he said he will. Not sure if its the same guy but he can make the legs any length.

Got these in the mail 6inch claws.

Wish i would of got the longer ones. Got this saltist 50 reel in the mail yesterday on a deal for 100 from tackle direct, cast very well and the brakes work great on it. The rod i put it on is a old 12ft uglystick casting rod and 8oz is on the light side when i was teat/practice casting with it. Im using 30lb mono yo get my skills up before i start throwing braid. I got a solid 100yds with the brakes on pretty tight. I got this guy from japan for 240 with shipping and its in very good condition, loudest drag I’ve ever heard. Im gonna catch some big red fish this year. Lol

Nice reels i dont know if i will ever switch away from spinning. If the bg8000 wont keep up with any of the big fish this year then i will just get a larger spinning reel.

The saltist 50 os about the equivalent of the bg 8000 its just a conventional and can be used a little different. The other tts 80w is just a beast and there is no casting that. Ive reeled in 5ft black tips like nothing. Its for long drops, big baits and fish. Just a completely different style of fishing.
