My wife is due to have our child in less than 1 week… I mean, she is ready to pop… We are delivering in the new Roper out there on 17 close to the Palmetto State Armory… I started thinking about how close the hospital was to Bulls Bay. Really only a few minutes at that point… And, there is plenty of parking…
So, let’s say, hypothetically that my skiff just happened to be hooked up to her car this week… And let’s say that she starts having contractions, and in a rush to get out of the door, I don’t have time to unhook the trailer from her car.
What are the chances that she might get annoyed at me after the child comes while she is resting and sends me away for a few hours. And, what are the chances that I can sneak in a quick trip to the bay and be back before she realizes that I have gone shrimping?
I bet one of the reasons she married you is because of your industriousness. The ability to multi-task is an admirable trait. The fact that you would be willing to go catch shrimp for her while she’s lounging around the hospital just goes to show that she made a great choice when she married you.
If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.

I'm with you! She can lay down and rest while I go out and provide for the family through the blood, sweat, and tears, that which we call "Shrimpin'"...
That’s a tough one. However, I have four kids, and 2 were born in October. I waited a couple days before I shrimped. Every once in a while it still gets brought up. Maybe you shouldn’t give her any ammo. Unless she really loves shrimp. She will want you with her and the baby. Even if she says I will be fine, you can go… Just looking out for you. Enjoy the 2 days in the hospital, and get some sleep. You may want it. The baby will be up every two hrs. To eat and get his/her diaper changed. Congrats! When the baby comes out, it’s like seeing a net full of shrimp!

While this is definitely true and she has probably nominated you for Husband of the Year SEVERAL times, a wise man once told me “if you have to think about crossing the intersection, the smart play is wait until it is clear!”
Only one baby would be a breeze. I would feel well rested and ready to take on the world. Tell her she’s lucky to only have one and that she’ll get more time alone with the baby if you leave for a half day.
My twins are four months old and there is no downtime while they are awake. My shrimping season is shot for the next few years, I’m afraid.
If she has already had the baby, there is no reason she can’t drive the boat while you throw the net. I have passed kidney stones on charters and kept on fishing so having a baby and going out isn’t much different.

Down here is where a signature goes but they can confuse and anger some people so I don’t have one.
I would suggest you trailer the boat and let her drive her car. This way, if she is discharged while you are shrimping, you wont have to cut your trip short to go pick her up and take her home…
If you’re real fast, you could shrimp during contractions! She will probably hate you during contractions and wish you were dead at that point in time! Win, win!

That is a good idea! She drops you and the boat off at the ramp, goes to the delivery room. She has the baby, recovers a little and then drives back to the ramp, to pick you and a full cooler up! At that point, you could take over the drive home, while she rests a little! You should let her rest some, so she can help you head shrimp before she cooks dinner!
