Went out on Saturday and caught a bunch of whiting, the biggest was about 12" on shrimp. Tried throwing out a spoon into the school of menhaden that was getting ripped up by something, but I couldn’t catch anything, just one take. On my sabiki rig, I hooked what had to be a bigger end of the slot red on shrimp, but it was on a 2500 series reel with 8 pound test. I fought it for what seemed to be forever, and once I got it almost into a spot where I could grab it, the off line broke off. Threw some pinfish out on my shark rig and ended up catching a 5’ 2" finetooth. Overall, not too bad of a trip.
Pete, you’ve been tearing those blacktips up this summer, nice work.
Thanks, I think it’s because i’m not able to get the bait out far enough for the bigger stuff. Hahahaha. Getting some variety would be nice.
Yea, you might have your variety, but take into consideration I suck at shark ID but the dorsal is pretty far back from the pelvic fin, might be something else, but once again, I suck at shark identification, so dont take my word for it.
Nice catch! But I would say Finetooth. With all the Menhaden in the surf, the Finetooth will follow.

There it is then, thanks. I just thought they were normally smaller.
Finetooth average adult size is about 5-1/2’. That one is for sure a nice one. Did it have kinda “prickely” teeth?

Ya, I just read the wikipedia page and that was definitely it.
Nice catch…
