I saw where DNR ticketed some of the local shrimpers who have been set up selling their catch on Coleman Blvd. I don’t blame DNR if what they were doing is illegal, but I thought it was legal?
Whats the difference between buying shrimp off a boat, Geechie Dock, Farmers Market, or Coleman Blvd?
And they are still out there selling it. What gives?
where did you see DNR ticketed them? wonder what’s the difference than buying right off the boat? or buying boiled peanuts from a roadside stand? do those guys need a retail license too?
I’d like to know how The skinneej One, would know a Baited Shrimp from a Trawled one:question: Or is there a sign saying, Buy Non Baited Shrimp Here:wink:
When kids are getting ticketed for lemonade stands without a food permit, this doesn’t surprise me a bit. I don’t know the exact rules, but the health department, county and city business licenses, and commercial seafood sales licenses would all come into play.
Not baited. Legally trawled shrimp. From what I understand they have peddler/retail licenses. I’ve been getting my shrimp from them for months this year. Why shop at a market and pay the middleman mark up when you can bypass it?

Easy, one purchase and any local should know the difference between baited and trawled.
The difference is peeled or peeled and de-veined. I think I would be 88% accurate in telling the difference… maybe.
I’ve never even looked at the road side vender shrimp! Are they veined and split shell? I’ve got a friend in Alabama, that has a shrimp boat and a Sea Food business and he says the machine that does the deveining is something to see!
I’m talking about the guys selling them right on the corner of Shem Creek and Coleman Blvd. It’s the people who own the shrimp boats. Just another way for them to sell their catch I guess. Couldn’t understand why DNR would ticket them, and the next day they are out there doing it again? Maybe they didn’t have some sort of license they were supposed to have.
It has been nice buying them this year so cheap and so fresh when ever we wanted shrimp. No need to freeze!
You are suppose to have a wholesale dealers license in order to retail seafood. You are also suppose to send in monthly reports of what you have received. You can feasibly get a ticket for every month you fail to do so, even if shrimp season is not in. Yes that is moronic but true. More than likely that was the case. You have to pay for the commercial license to catch, and the license to sell.
It may seem moronic but the only way DNR has any idea of the landings is from wholesale dealer reports. Unlike other states Licensed commercial fisherman do not have to report their landings but are required to sell to a wholesale dealer who indicates which commercial fishermen they bought the product from. Of course a lot of under the table sales go on and I have heard in DNR presentation something like less than 60% of the commercial crabbers, shrimpers, etc. ever appear in the database as having sold through a legal channel. Makes managing the fishery and having any understanding of what is going on virtually impossible.
I completely understand the reasoning behind it. I guess I was looking at it from a shrimpers perspective. The season isn’t open year around. I know of a few people who get the dealers license just to peddle shrimp, and get tickets in March because they didn’t fill out the reports during the off season. Most do not consider that you also have the right to sell fish or crabs or whatever…
I didn’t see the guy who sets up by Red Top Feed Supply this past Sunday, which is odd because he usually has a line of people. Wonder if it had something to do with this. His shrimp come from out of state, Florida I think he said one time when I stopped by. I didn’t like the quality of the shrimp he had, they were mushy, I guess from being in ice water for several days…

I don't buy roadside shrimp, but I've always heard that you could smell bait. Haven't verified it myself, but figured someone else could.
