the surf has been flat for most of the winter. peak wave season typically starts in early spring w/ may usually being the best month for the southern pacific coastal areas. tamarindo/ witches rock is the opposite, dec.- may is the best for the northern pacific beaches.
yea, planning a surf trip and getting skunked is very disapointing. ive only had one trip that falls into that catagory and it was in late november. the surf was good but it rained for 5 days striaght… im not talking showers here, when its rains there its of biblical proportions… mind numbing, alcohol inducing, pray for forgivness type rain… for days and days and days…
the multiple layovers are intentionally set up that way IMO so at some point you have to stay in the city and spend some money. im to the point that i fly in to SJ the evening before, stay at the best western across from the airport and leave out on the first morning hopper to where ever im going. typically the same thing coming back so i will for sure make my flight home. missed it once and payed dearly $$$$
Caliman said april-may is the best waves. He’s caught 10 Meter waves at Matapalo and rode them past backwash bay. He said they’re even longer rides on the Pavones side. Everything i heard and read about the northern coast says it’s very developed and commercialized, but the Osa is still pretty undeveloped with the countries largest Primary Rainforest. Plus very little crime, drugs, and prostitution on the Osa makes a great family vacation spot, if you can live without TV and AC.
Thanks Eryc, i hope it inspires some families to consider CR for a vacation/education trip. It was a great learning experience for them and brought us closer together as a family. We didn’t see a TV for over a week and didn’t miss it a bit. We’ll definatly be going back.
Well, my once monthly post certainly needs to be a “job well done” from Atlanta. Awsome pics, stories and memories. I gotta stop there next time I get a chance. Thanks for the post.
Beautiful pictures and family TUNANUT. You’re raising quite the sportsman there in Alex it looks like. Those are memories I’m sure he’ll be telling to his grandchildren someday. Class act in my book, my hat’s off to you Sir.
Micheal we stayed at the Iguana Lodge in Pt. Jimenez. It’s owned by Toby and Lauren, defense attornies sick of the rat race. It’s a laid back place that if you ask, they’ll try to make it happen. Open air bathrooms, no AC. If you leave your lights on while you go to dinner, you’ll have a room full of bugs when you get back. Promise! What made this trip a little extra special is that the grandparents joined us in the Osa. Don’t think you’re to old Penny, check out grandma and grandpa gearn’ up for the zipline. They loved it.
this was the path from our cottage to the beach
i could get use to seeing the sun rise over Pavones
Breakfast at the lodge. Check out the background
