Slow but steady Trout 12/3

Fished outgoing tide today in the Cowen Creek area. Started out pretty slow but picked up a little bit around 11am. Managed to put 8 keepers in the cooler, threw back a bunch that were just under 14”. Had our best luck with live shrimp under corks. All in all, a good day!

Nothing wrong with that.

I have never targeted trout, just caught while fishing for reds with popping cork and 18"flouro leader.

Gonna start having a slip cork rig on deck as it is quickly adjusted to depth as they will often be caught deeper, along with another rig with the Trout Eye jighead tied on that can be used with a variety of plastics, or live bait.

I double the motion about the slip corks and the Trout Eye jig heads. This summer I caught lots of Black Drum and Red Drum fishing deep around banks where the trees eroded into the water and bends with rip rap and docks. Fished with dead shrimp anywhere from 8 to 15 feet. The slip corks allowed the bait to cover some ground and float near the structure. The Black Drum bite was much slower than the Red Drum as they seemed to nibble at the bait. The Trout Eyes rigged with Trout Trick tails were deadly on Trout as well as Flounder fished in moving water around white oyster shell banks. Here is a link to a site that sells slip corks that also have the rattle feature. They have a much stronger center tube that lasts much longer than another brand with a thin tube. I recommend the floats with the black bottom when you need to fish shallow.

Good point about the slip-bobbers DoubleN. I’m still learning the inshore redfish scene around Beaufort - seems like all I catch is trout haha. With my boat, I’m usually “wind-limited” when trying to get across larger bodies of water to fish different areas. Sneaking into a spot and dropping an anchor and getting set up without making all kinds of noise in a metal boat can be a challenge as well.

Hey Taco- how you like that Tohatsu? I got to get me a new 20 for my jon this year. I hear they make a lot of the powerheads on small outboards anyway and the price has about got me sold.

It’s been great. I’ve had it for a year and have not had a single issue w/ it. Mine’s a 20hp as well, manual start and trim. It pushes my flatbottom 1448 at around 25 mph with it loaded down, closer to 30 mph w/ just my dog and I - plenty fast for me. I upgraded from a 1978 Evinrude 9.9hp so it was like getting a new boat. Got it from onlineoutboards.com. I shopped around for a long time and their price couldn’t be beat. The customer service and buying experience w/ them was excellent.

You’re correct about Tohatsu making the powerheads for a lot of motors under 50hp.
