Small Tips

I had a friend from up north coming down to Kiawah for a family vacation, so we set up some time to go fishing. Sunday we spent a few hours in the kayaks with the fly rods, dodging t-storms, and didn’t get any love. Joe hooked a nice fish (red or bonnet) blind casting around some oysters, but got sawed off on said oysters and never saw the fish. I jumped and lost a lady fish.

Joe expressed an interest in surf fishing for sharks, so we went out for a few hours around high on Tuesday. We had no trouble making fresh baits with plenty of whiting and rays on the small rods. We put our “big” baits out as far as we could, wading and casting. In the hour and a half leading up to high we got lots of knockdowns. I landed a big ray and couple of smaller blacktips (61" and 63"); missed 2 fish that never hooked up, and broke off two fish trying to horse them too much (lesson learned, I hope, one was a nicer BT in the 6+ foot range). Joe was a bit undergunned and had to break off two fish that would have spooled him. Meanwhile, we had constant action on our smaller rods with whiting, blues, ladyfish, and baby sharks. Nothing fantastic, but fun fishing for the 3 hours we were out.

Sounds like a good time.

What type of bait were you using for the whiting, blues, and ladyfish?

Fresh peeled shrimp bits on small hooks.
