Apparently the powers that be no longer want you to use the free boat ramp on Sullivan’s Island. It was sure great while it lasted. Somehow, I think I’m going to find a way to blame this on the influx of unwanted Yankees.
Station 26, open to paddle boarders, golf carts, kayaks, and popped collars from this point forward…
The way the posts look and what the article states, it seems that you can still launch a kayak there. I just don’t think they want people backing trailers down anymore. I’d walk my kayak down for sure.
“Sullivan’s Island Town Council voted 7-0 In favor of the measure, which was introduced at the council’s monthly meeting Aug. 16 by Councilmember Bachman Smith IV, chairman of the Public Facilities Committee.”
Doing a little research I found out that Mr. Bachman Smith lives a few doors down from Station 26 ramp. It sure is nice that he’s on the board that can restrict most people from using his ramp.
The good ole boy network…
I’ve been going to this ramp for maybe 10-12 years now, I forget how long really, but to say its the trailers that are tearing it up is silly at best. One person’s opinion is not fact or science. That ramp gets covered by saltwater during floods over 6’ or so. That’s what degrades the ramp. Its not the 10-15 trailers that the ramp sees per week in the peak of summer time. This was all an effort to begin to privatize the ramp for the nearby home builders.
The biggest boat I ever saw there was a 16’ creek boat. A few crabbers’ boats and yaks and paddle boards. There was rarely more than 3 trailers parked down there ever.
its a shame the kayak groups won’t launch there and clog the landing with 30 yaks across the ramp and creek. that’d give Mr. Smith something to legislate. i bet he has a 600 ft dock with no lights or reflectors. lets get him

I don’t have a problem with Mr. Smith or his background or his family or his heritage. If I were in his position and could get my nearby boat ramp essentially privatized to be used how I deemed it fit, I’d certainly do it. I’d be all over it actually. I read up on him and his community involvement after I started researching this. He seems to have deep roots to Charleston and Sullivan’s Island communities and does a lot for them.
Kudos to him for being smart enough to get things done and done nicely for his neighborhood. It just sucks for other people who enjoyed that PUBLIC resource since the 1920s. Nothing more.
Only reason for my post was in response to the “Yankee” comment from the OP. Was pointing out the reason for the blockade was due to a native. Not all northerners are “Yankees”

That was a joke…there is no sarcasm font. Its got nothing to do with Yankees; it has to do with the new home builders there trying to take over that ramp as their own when its been open to the public for 90 something years.

You act like you can't enjoy it anymore. Get a canoe with a small motor on it and you can still put in there to go catch a redfish. IF you haven
T noticed our area has grown overtime and in some cases we are our own worst enemies. 800ft docks stretching out into creek mouths suck but they are there. You claiming he wants to shut it down for his own use is wrong. How do you know he didn't launch a micro skiff at the same ramp and it really sucks for him having to push the city to shut it down. Now he has to use another ramp to launch his boat.

Down here is where a signature goes but they can confuse and anger some people so I don’t have one.
Maybe he is from the Bachmann Turner Overdrive Smith’s. BTW it is next to impossible to become a member of Goldbug I heard people have to die to open up membership spots.
