South Edisto

I want to take a boat trip down the South Edisto starting at Hwy 17 and ending up at Edisto Beach. I do not know the water anything I should know about? How long of trip is it? At slow speed

Putting in at 17 (Jacksonboro) and running to Edisto Beach will take you about 3 hours at slow speed. I have made it in just under 2 hours, but I was not crusing. I would strongly suggest you try and not make the trip at low water (how big is your boat?) - try and cathc incoming to high water. There is more than one tricky area with sandbars. Good trip - nothing but mother nature!
Let me know if you have any more questions.

You gotta love the South Carolina Lowcountry.

I have a 16’ Scout. Me and a friend were thinking of trying to make a day of it. Fishing some on the way and maybe if we catch something having a shore lunch, assuming there is somewhere to get on the bank.

You should make it OK in your boat. I still think it would be a good idea to plan on incoming to high water for the first 1/2 leg of your trip. There are spots that you can get on the bank.

Thanks I have been warned of the sand bars by a few people I will try to plan on high tide. You just can’t beat a good river trip, especially if there is plenty of nature and not many people. Will I see a lot of houses? Sorry for the questions but I am an upstate transplant. Don’t know much about the coast.

Striker,
You will not see a lot of houses. There is a area called Willtown Bluff on the left about 15-20 minutes below Jacksonboro - very historic. Still has at least one old home, but it is hard to see from the water. There is a Charleston County boat landing there, but I have not used it in a long time.
Most of what you will see is just natural - some old rice fields.
I did a trip years ago putting in at Canadys (Highways 15 & 61) about 15 miles above Walterboro and ending up at Edisto Beach. You can make it from there to Edisto easily in a day, but you need high water or a jon boat. Pretty River!
Good Luck!

Yes, that is a pretty part of the Edisto River. If it is warm enough, you will see alligators. As you travel the river, just remember to follow the bends. The mud banks can be a problem. Just do not take short cuts, follow the flow of the river and enjoy the “Mother Nature”. I have traveled the Edisto River from Orangeburg to the ocean atleast 15 times. Jacksonboro to the ocean atleast 40 times.

Really want this to be an all day trip should I put in farther up the river?

It would depend on the height of the river and how knowable you are of Edisto - it can be tricky in some places - LOTS of sandbars!

Since you stated that you do not know the river, it would be best if you stick to your original plan of starting in Jacksonboro and ending up at Edisto Beach. Do it when the tide is high in Jacksonboro and just follow the tide down to the ocean. You will enjoy it!

Anywhere to get minnows near Jacksonboro?

I can not think of any place in Jacksonboro. Your best bet would be Lowcountry Marine (843-549-1234) or Plantation Marine (843-549-4301)in Walterboro, or there is a Hardware store in Ravenel that used to carry bait, but I’m sorry I do not have the number or name.

I would stick with the Jacksonboro plan. Water at Givans is 3.2’. You will have MANY sandbars to deal with if you go all the way to hwy15. Maybe at most put in at Givans. Some really flat shallows between there and 15.
