Anybody know if the spadefish are still around the offshore reefs and are there still plenty of jellyballs in the Port Royal Sound? I was thinking about a trip to some of the near shore reefs this coming weekend. Thanks
I don’t know about the spade fish but I have not seen the jellyballs lately.
Jellyballs get smaller and smaller as the summer wears on. I have caught spadefish late into September. If you look slowly and closely in the tide lines near the mouth of St. Helena Sound or Port Royal Sound, you will likely see jellyballs around the size of golf balls or a little larger. These are great baits for spadefish…just freeline them (whole) behind the boat or cast them into the spades when they surface. If you don’t see the fish, use a weight and drop these whole small jellyballs down until you feel the spades feeding on them.
Good luck…
Spadefish are on the artificial reefs year around. You can also catch them on small pieces of shrimp, cut squid and small strips of cellophane.

See them every time we dive the near shore but don’t find them all that tasty.

I once tossed over a honeydew mellon rind and they attacked it, so I cut a chunk and caught one!
Thanks for the replies.
