Water needs to warm up a bit but look for birds from Big Bay Creek out to Edisto 60. Throw spoons at fish on top or troll out the back while looking for fish. 2 years ago, I caught spanish up near the grass in St. Pierre creek–quite a surprise.
What kind of water temp?

Smoakin’, I have caught spanish up in St Pierre and saw a tarpon up near Peter’s Pt. a few years ago. I have often wondered just how far up they will follow the bait.
Striker, not real sure the temp (probably upper 70’s) but May thru July seem to be about the right time.
It’s funny the things you see when you look…I’ve seen sturgeon jumping up river and saw a manatee (no I wasn’t drinking—it was early a.m. about mid-October last year) in Big Bay Creek. I never ceased to be amazed.
Thats so true last year me and friend were fishing for whiting in the sound and saw a manta-ray jump that looked six foot across. We both just happened to be looking and wouldn’t have admited seeing it if we both had not witnessed it at the same time. There are some wild stuff out there. Its so fun just to be able to get out and watch good ole Mother Nature.

Got some advice today to try trolling near the sand bar off front beach with spoons in May or June

That is a good area to blind troll but your best bet is to look for diving birds.
was surfing in long beach, nc about 20 yrs ago(lived there) and heard a pop and another and a whole bunch more pops. suddenly i was surrounded by skates or small rays schooling and jumping like mullet on the run. here i am out in the water in a school of bait sitting on a surfboard. it was a huge school too. what i wonder about is what was running that school of 3ish foot rays to the top while i was sitting there in the water. musta been big. cool xperience though.

speaking of diving birds, we saw tons of birds diving last friday out north of the edisto 40 and when we would get within a hundred yards they would stop. after a few minutes we would see them diving again farther away and could never get close. Would trolling past the area they were diving with planers of been productive at all?

If they were spanish or bluefish, fishing with spoons on a planer would have been your best bet this time of year. I have heard and seen bluefish in the area you are referring to @ this time of year.

You gotta love the South Carolina Lowcountry.
yea, we did troll for and catch those a later day, but we couldnt get close to the diving birds before they moved off

Don, You going to Edisto anytime soon? We are going this weekend.
Froggy, my cousin’s wedding is Sat. so that’s out. If I can swing it, I might make a trip Friday or Sunday. Need to try out my new Riptide trolling motor. Yall heading offshore or staying in?
I am going down Thursday night, and might run out to the 60 if it is nice on Friday.
10-4. I’m still shootin for Friday or Sunday–depends on the wife. My cousin hit the 60 a few weeks back and did well. I went a month and a half ago and could only make the 40 hole. Caught some fish but got beat to death. Will probably be inshore. I’ll call you on 68 or 69 if I get down on Friday. Good luck.
