Was walking back from my dock around 7pm. Was right at high tide, flood tide fills up the marsh all the way back to the house. Have about a 150 yard walkway, about half way back I was looking down and see this flash. At first I thought it was a blue crab. Its a large spottail. In about a foot or less of water. Counldn’t believe they swim that far in from the river (75 yards or so). What’s the best way to fish for them if they’re that far in.
Look for other posts about tailing reds. Never done it myself but they seemed pretty informative with specific baits hooks etc.
Just wait until you see the tail and cast either live bait or a artificial lure in their general vicinity. I usually like to cast ahead of them, into the path they are traveling. I have had good luck with gulp crabs if you don’t have any bait, rigged on either a weighted hook, or 2/0 circle hook with no weight. Chasing tailing reds in the flats, is my favorite way to fish for them.
Don’t have a knack for makin motors crank,
But I’m pretty good at drinkin beer.
The best way to a fisherman’s heart is through his fly.
Toss a blue crab chunk on a 3/0 circle if you want to get an immediate hookup.
A more fun/ sportsman like way is a weedless rigged PaddlerZ or MinnowZ. Cast in front of him and reeled and jigged in front of their heads. Haddrells point has all the stuff for chasing reds! They tail because they swim up to rarely accessible marshes in search of fiddler crabs.
Don’t let anyone see or hear you using a castnet for fish, other fishermen won’t be too inclined to help ya, and DNR will fine you.

If you find that you have 20+ people walking and poling and otherwise fishing in your backyard tomorrow (because, you posted pictures of a grass fishing spot) please, understand that it is not legal to shoot at them.
Lol, I don’t anyone wants to go to the trouble of doing that just to be chased off by the police. And a video system captures anyone who walks on the dock. But wouldn’t mind company some time if they ask.

Never mind. “Backyard” went right over your head.
No it didn’t, you mean marsh- nope that’s part of the property, is in the deed to the house. But this isn’t a real estate or property discussion board. Thanks for your concern though.

That’s about as funny as the guy who put up no trespassing signs on the marsh that he owns in the ICW behind Sullivan’s…
It’s a sad, sad time…
you should be able to gig and cast net tailing bass . And fence your marsh.

And I should be able to harvest and butcher a deer on my own property anytime I want, but we don’t get to make the rules…
Wouldn’t it be a really rare Kings Grant that gives title to anything below the high tide line?
I’ve had a few people tell me they were going to call the cops for me fishing in “their marsh”… told them to go make the call, their yelling was disturbing my fishing

My thoughts exactly. I don’t know anything about SC property, but in Georgia the land owner only owns to the mean high tide line. The state owns the rest.
