anyone have thoughts on these? I’m seeing mixed reviews, but seems like they may do well in the Folly surf. Or will they just tangle up and be a pain?
we use them when fishing folly for sharks and big reds, they make a big difference. Current tends to be pretty strong and pyramids don’t hold as well which isn’t good when we have 12-20 rods over 200 yds of beach.
great, thanks!
They work for me. I like to use one when I use my Penn Sargus 2000 on a 6 ft. UglyStik since a heavy pyramid is too heavy. I make my own with large hole 1 or 2 oz. egg weights and large paperclips.
Spitniks work real well. A 3 or 4 oz Sputnik will hold in the surf where 6 oz bank sinker will fail!

They hold well. Great for a big nasty chunk of mullet you want to get way out & let soak and put rod in a spike. A 4oz one will usually always hold.

in most cases the sputniks hold fine and i usually go with 4-5oz or so while shark fishing. if current is ripping and you have a bait with a lot of surface area like a chunk of stingray they they will get uprooted, but aside from that they hold strong. when current is moving on the other hand then yes lines CAN get wrapped in em, but not every time and not always that badly. when casting large steel leaders theyre great to put the hook eye in 1 of the legs to cast the weight all in 1 spot rather than 6 feet apart.
nice, thanks for the info, as always guys. I’m a d.i.y. (see cheapskate) kind of guy, so now looking into making my own. I’m thinking drilling through some 3 oz barrel weights and fixing wire through that.
Try taking a 3-4 ounce egg sinker (if you have them) and pound them flat with a hammer on concrete. Not pancake flat, but more like how a water balloon sits when it’s half full (really squat).
You have to put some stainless steel (or similar) wire/rod inside it that’s been greased up with something before you flatten it and it can be a bear to get it out, but I’ve done this on quite a number of egg sinkers and it works quite well in current if you aren’t using huge baits. Doesn’t roll much.
Perfect! Can’t wait to try this in the surf. Thanks a ton. Pics when these are made…
