ST HELENA SOUND AREA

I’m fishing this area in early July. Never fished the area. Was wondering what to expect as far as a trout bite goes. Fished the Florida flats but never the low country. Pretty pumped. Just getting mixed info on whether to be closer to the ocean or up in the rivers.

Biggest advise being new in this area. Run the creeks at Low tide and get a feel for our structure. Lot’s of sand and mud flats in and around the sound. Lot’s of fresh water dumping in right now so further up in the creeks won’t be so good, but who knows when July gets here. We may be in another drought. If you can’t find a trout, you’ll have plenty of action from the baby black tips. We’ve had a mild winter and trout have been pretty easy to target.

Welcome to the lowcountry! One quick way is look for the white PVC poles strategically placed around the shore lines. … if someone hasn’t knocked them all down again.

On closing, you’ll have better luck getting someone to tell you spot tail holes than trout hot spots. I can tell you my secret spots in two words. Salt Water. Use the search function on trout and you’ll find some pretty good stuff, watch the background in the pictures.

I saw those and figured someone left their shrimp poles out from last season. There was about 10 of them in a row at 1 spot.

Do people really mark fishing spots with PVC pipe? Dang, they must be absentminded if they can’t find their spot:smiley:

haha maybe it’s an inside joke that the locals play on newcomers… just to see how many fools will ride around for a week trying to find a few pvc poles

but his profile photo at least leads me to think we agree on one thing!

Pick up a Fishing Hot Spots Map when you get here Troutman3…every darn one of my “secret” holes are well marked on that dang thing! It’s well worth the purchase price!

July can be hot and difficult to target trout, but with two mild winters in a row, they should be fairly plentiful.

Good luck!

A lot of the PVC poles out there are marking big oyster beds too…which I guess could be marking someone’s fishing hole…

I have never really targeted trout but seems like we catch them at the same drops we catch spottails, just in the deeper, clearer, faster moving water further away from the bank than you find the bass.

Popping cork and some live bait is the trick for me…find some structure, oyster bed, dock etc. and put a bait close to it and see what happens…

I was looking through one of those last year, and it almost made me mad that so many of my supposed secret spots was well know.

No inside joke, well maybe a little, but someone has marked a lot of productive areas with poles. Also when fishing said poles the actual “hot” spot my be “slightly” to the left or right of them. dang did I just say that?

Good luck dude!
