Went to Station 21 yesterday afternoon and caught more whiting than I could count on a sabiki rig while trying to catch pinfish for sharks. It figures, you only catch pinfish when you don’t want to. I eventually got one and caught a small 2.5 foot (what I think was a) finetooth. Overall, not too exciting.
Pete use the whiting, its great bait for reds and sharks.
X2 on the whiting. Way better bait than pinfish.

Do you chunk the whiting, or use them live?
For sharks if u catch smaller whiting the best bet is live, but keep in mind they will eat anything literally. I also like to cut in half and chunk out which also works just fine. The sharks will also eat baby sharks, blues , rays, they just wont pass up a meal. If you use a ray dont pick a giant one as u would be wasting the rest of fish, which aint right and dont use any reds, cause we want to catch them later. Regarding what to use for Bull reds they like mullet and blue crabs and will also eat whiting, shrimp allot of stuff, but stick to mullet chunks or filets, a half of crab-legs removed, or whiting chunks or filets. Seasonally some sharks will stay for a while and Ive had them hit my red rigs well into the fall. Regarding surf fishing for reds a general time slot to target them is labor day to thanksgiving, but that doesnt mean they cant be caught other times of year last couple of years I have had success as early as sept 1 in which i caught 3 nice ones with it being 100 degrees outside literally sweating my ass off . I hope this can help, by the way nice shark a couple of weeks ago Pete. Fall aint that much further now, cant wait to feel that first cool weather move in.
