Got a question.
I’ve been surf fishing this year for the first time and I’ve been doing pretty well. I am losing a ton of sharks due to breakoffs. I did catch one decent redfish on steel the other day. I was thinking about using a small piece of steel (4 inches) attached to an 8/0 circle hook. DO you think that this will limit my redfish, or for that matter shark hookups? Your advice is appreciated
It should not limit your red hook up rate, but as for safety to the reds, I’d make sure I did not use more than the 4inch leader you’re describing. When they are running as thick as they are now the big reds will def not shy away from a steel leader as long as there is a nice cut bait at the end of it!
I have switched between 12" steel leaders and 60 lb mono leaders and both work fine. Just a reminder - if you use steel make sure you use a hook type clasp. I had 2 pull the clasps apart on the non hooking type.
