Still 19 degrees!

And it’s 9:30 with the sun shining. I can honestly say I haven’t seen this kind of cold in the last 20 years in the low country. Water temp. this morning (daylight) in Bailey Creek was 43 and has warmed to 45 with the incoming tide.

Thanks for the update, RD. Water temp. really took quite a plunge overnight!

In Charleston, as of last evening, the water temp was 50-52. Today and tonight will be bad I think.

Does anyone have a link to a graph showing the water temp over the last 12, 24, or 48 hours?

Too bad to fish? Serious (not rhetorical) question.

“I’m not a hundred percent in love with your tone right now…”

I don’t think that exists. If you find it, let me know, but obviously you will have some pretty wild variances depending on the location. The mouth of the harbor will be several degrees warmer than up the rivers and creeks, especially during low tide tonight and in the morning.

The redfish bite will be strong as the water is still getting colder. They won’t have a lot of fight, but flats reds won’t move far or fast, and will strike lots of different artificials. The coldest water I’ve seen around here is 41 and the reds were eating whatever you through at em.

Thanks, Dave. I just checked the Wando River, and that graph looks pretty encouraging. If a read it right, it said 50 degrees at 11:00.

Yes. The top link is also excellent and has water temp too. Not sure where it’s sampled

Water temp. in Bailey Creek at dead high tide was 46.

During the 2000-01 winter, which resulted in one of the worst cold water kills of spotted seatrout since the eighties, water temps in Charleston Harbor stayed below 45 degrees for about seven consecutive days. That’s what we really don’t want to see.

If you search “Spotted Seatrout SCDNR” on Youtube, you can see a short video about what happened in 2010-11. Graphs on that video may be of interest.

09-11 was just as bad around my waters.

Here is a link to a post I made a year or two ago with overlay plots of water temp over winter. This data comes from the USGS wando river link. 2010 plot is the one shown in the DNR video mentioned by Robert above.

Didn’t we have a bad trout kill last time it got this cold or did it not stay cold long enough to have this effect? I hope we don’t have another trout kill because it is just recovering from the last one.

Temp at 48.6 and holding. Should rise from here…

Yep, and it looks like the rain coming in will be a warm rain too.
