Went fishing at the jetties around 11 today and caught a bunch of black sea bass and other small fish. Get back to the Wapoo landing (busy as always on the weekend) and saw that someone stole my trailer. It was locked on my vehicle and with all of the people around that landing today, these a**holes cut the lock and stole the tailer in broad daylight. Warning to everyone reading this, make sure your trailers at secure and have heavy duty locks.
Wow, i’m sorry that happened to you. I’m amazed someone pulled that off on a saturday afternoon. Have you been able to get your boat out yet?
Happened to me at Remleys a few years ago…I was racing back to the landing a few minutes ahead of a big storm. My trailer was less than a month old, the lock was laying in pieces on the ground. The cop told me i should have used a better lock.
My boat is currently at a friend’s dock. Hopefully I can get a new trailer with my insurance this week to get it out. If anyone has better ideas about locking the trailer, I would greatly appreciate it thanks.

If you had it locked I would say you were doing your due diligence. It’s not like James Island is a crime ridden area. Really sorry that happened man!!!

Thanks for sharing the links. To show my ignorance, I assume the puck lock (first link) is what you would need to secure your trailer to the ball hitch?
One big issue I see with most boat ramps around this area is that the parking spots are designed to pull the tow vehicle in first. This makes it incredibly easy for someone to steal a trailer.
Had my boat stolen off my truck in Virginia. Police wouldn’t help said it negligence on my part. The $30 pad lock wasn’t adequate.
This is how you use the puck lock!

Nice locks, but they address security when the trailer is not attached to a vehicle.
I’m reading about trailers being stolen while they are attached to vehicles. I’m in the hunt for a hardened lock that will fit through the trailer hitch lever hole and secure the trailer while it is on the ball hitch.
There is a YouTube channel done by a “Bosnianbill” who is a master lock picker and is interesting to watch. One episode h e takes a ball peen hammer, wraps on a common master lock and opens it no problem. He has an episode where he recommends top notch locks for locking up a motorcycle and things. The locks he recommends are around $70-$120 but he knows what he’s talking about. Worth a watch.

Something to consider doing is to boot your trailer if you have slotted wheels, but you need to remember it before trying to move the trailer.
By boot, I mean getting a section of thick hardened chain and a heavy duty hardened lock that is passed through the slots in one of your trailer wheels and trailer frame. Sure it can eventually get cut off, but you are adding an extra layer of time consumption that the crooks may not want to deal with.
These are a good add on to a good tongue lock. Simply hook the leaf spring, slide through tire slot and add lock. Just adding a extra layer of protection and helping to ensure you have a trailer to come back to.
One Simple Thanks!!

EASY; Thanks for sharing this information. I was totally unaware of locks of this nature. To believe we as a people would do something of this nature. Lock on!!!

Don’t just lock the trailer to the hitch, also make sure the receiver hitch is locked to the truck, or they can just pull one pin and take it, hitch and all.

I hate a thief. Scum of the earth as far as I’m concerned.
I talked to a couple of gentlemen that were at the ramp and they said they saw two white males with a black dodge ram truck and an escalade. The police don’t seem interested in returning my calls so if y’all see one of these vehicles with a silver wesco trailer (single axel) with a blue rubber stopper by the winch please let me know. It also has a spare tire on the front lying flat with a gold lock on the spare.

And don’t forget to swage or tack weld the threads on the ball below the mount plate so the thieves can’t simply unscrew the ball and steal it that way.
Trailer theft is rampant right now. I had a locked trailer stolen from my office on Memorial Day weekend. To make matters worse - I had 2 ATVs, a brand new set of truck tires, a kayak, and sets of ramps on the trailer. That’s a haul.
Talked to a friend whose son plays in a band … their band trailer was stolen while they were playing a show from the parking lot.
More recently, a neighbor had a cargo trailer stolen from their yard while they were away for 30 minutes.
Crazy. Keep your eyes open and report anything that looks suspicious.
