Good luck but don’t get your hopes up! I had a boat stolen a few months ago. They cut a tongue lock off and I had a chain running through the rim around the trailer! The new boat stays in the garage from now on. Sorry to hear about your loss. It would be nice if they had cameras at landings, but I know that will not be happening anytime soon.

We don’t even have trash cans at most landings.
One Simple Thanks!!

Cameras at landings? He’ll I’d vote to have docks built before installing cameras. Too many ramps without docks around here.
If you think the cops are lax wait till you go around with the ins. co! Good luck! Sorry about your loss.
I like the idea of the cameras. Two HD cameras with a 24 hour loop placed at both exits to Wappoo and any of the other public ramps. I wouldnt think it would take too much in private donations to make it happen. I would happily donate to a gofundme if the proper officials approved it… Sorry (again) to hear about your trailer. We met while you were anchored…

I agree with digger54. I’m surprised that he and I are the only ones who might use a wheel boot. If the wheel won’t turn, the thief may look for an easier target.

A bike kryptonite u-lock might work as a boot on some smaller tires.

Had that happen at the Shem creek landing a couple of years back while shrimping. I was told that it happens several times a week. They take the trailer somewhere and cut it up. Sell it for scrap metal. If I see anyone from now on removing a trailer at a boat ramp. I will call the cops and let them verify. We should all do that. Probably only a couple of people doing it. I so hate that for you. Make sure the insurance company does you right fight like hell. I had to buy they trailer I needed and come out of pocket. THEN get them to pay.

The West Ashley Outboard Motor Club has secure parking, private ramp, toilets, ice machine, wash station, kitchen and a picnic area. The membership is full but you can come to a meeting to look into applying for next year. The meetings start at six PM with dinner on the fourth Thursday of the month. It is on a creek off the Stono. Reply and I will give anyone interested the address. From a Former Commodore.

An inexpensive option would be to put a dash camera in your vehicle and point it to the rear watching the trailer:
Get one that has the capacity for a huge memory card. These cameras overwrite recorded files, so you’d want a card big that’s enough to store several hours worth of video before overwriting.
These things are pretty cheap, look on Amazon for dash cameras. $50 will get you a decent one.
Maybe if someone uses one of these and catches the thief, these eff’rs can finally be put in jail.

Can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people not doing that. Have some super tough tungsten carbide padlock, but then just a simple pin holding the hitch to the receiver. You know what’s actually easier than cutting a lock, and more universally sized?? A hitch…
I happened to be in traffic yesterday over on Lady’s Island and came up on a truck that had what I thought was a pintle hook. Upon looking closer, this is what he had. I found the pic on wally world where this model sells for around $87. Looks like another layer of security for the trailers being snatched from vehicles.
Sorry to hear of the stolen property. I had my truck tool box broken into and several things stolen at the Virginia Ave. boat landing in broad daylight in April. I notified the North Charleston police. I have yet to get a reply. There is no money to be made by the cities for these type of crimes. Now 5 miles over the speed limit or an open container, rolling through a stop sign etc. are illegal, however there is big money involved for the Mayors of our tri-county cities. While I am on the subject of Mayors, why can’t you get an appointment to speak with them? You only get to talk to their hey boys. The same goes for the Berkeley county supervisor. And they wonder why people get p----d off.
Digger I have that type of setup for my trailer hitch. Once you put a trailer on the ball it won’t close enough to allow a pin to be put in it. It is hard to find a good quality lock for all trailers. The holes in the coupler latches are not uniform. Maybe find a way to lower the tail gates and figure out how to jam it down so it can’t be raised. That would cause a thief a lot of problems. I know, that would also make it hard on us as well unless it is something we could easily set up and take down without it being obvious to the crooks.

I agree about no standards regarding coupler latches. Just as bad most lock manufacturers do not list what the shackle/shank diameter is on their product package. You pretty much have to eyeball and hope you are buying the right size. On my trailer the hole was 5/16. I estimated the locks I saw at Lowes were 1/4, 5/16, and 3/8. They had some smaller locks designed for the latch but looked pretty easy to beat off.

run a long high strength cable lock through the trailer frame, put 1 end through the other, lock the loose end to your truck where you hang the safety chains, easy and quick to install and remove
I like the dash cam idea as I was thinking here as I was reading what if we used a roll on jack lift & a batt operated lug drill & removed 1 side wheel or wheels & inconspicuously locked it inside the vehicle. I’d like to see the look on some jacklegs face who shows up to steal a trailer but can’t drive off without wheels. I know it would be troublesome but some guys are pretty fast changing wheels…

Shame that you can’t even go fishing anymore without having to worry about your stuff. Sorry that happened. Someone jimmied the lock on my truck tool box couple years ago at bushy park. All they got was some crappy old jumper cables and a cheap socket set I keep for emergency maintenance. Nothing will piss you off more than a thief…
