Stranded 23 ft Sea Pro

Does anyone know the guys that were stranded offshore near the ledge in the 23 ft Sea Pro?

Curious too…Heard the CG side on the radio…Helo was above them communicating it sounded like. I think the EPIRB was activated?

Was this Saturday?

maybe their radio died and that’s what they mean by “no radio”?. that happened to us once. I don’t wish that on anyone. A lonely feeling

Or, took on water and shorted the electrical system…

Logic would dictate if you have an EPIRB you probably have a radio, but who knows…

The Coast Guard helicopter buzzed by us then circled us while looking for them. I waived to the crew member that was sitting in the door and he waived back. The helicopter then proceeded about three miles off of my bow and began to circle. This is when we noticed how close the vessel was to us. The Coast Guard then called me on the radio and asked if I could act as a relay vessel for them. I told them that I would but I had not heard any communications from the vessel. They told me that the vessel may have a problem with their radio. I then proceeded to the vessel and circled in close enough to talk to the two guys on board. I asked if they had plenty of water and if they needed anything. They said they had plenty of water and that Tow Boats U.S. was on the way to get them. They said that their engine would not start and that they believed it to be a fuel pump issue. They also said that they had only had the boat for about two weeks. While talking to them I couldn’t help but notice the lack of a VHF antenna or anything else installed on the T-Top. I did not see a radio mounted on the console either. They thanked me for checking on them and I let them know that we were going to continue to fish but that I would keep them in sight until the cavalry arrived. I then headed back to our live bottom. The Coast Guard had me switch to 23A for all additional communication about this incident. I heard a short dialogue between the chopper and the Coast Guard station about a discrepancy between the name on the Tow Boat U.S. membership and the names of the two who were actually on board the vessel. A few hours went by and I heard nothing but radio silence. I attempted to hail the CG on 23A but it appeared that they had forgotten about me on that channel. I hailed them on 16 and asked for an ETA on the Tow Boat vessel. They informed me that Tow Boat U.S. was no longer coming and that they were sending a CG vessel. Several more hours then went by as we continued to fish. At around 1800 I hailed the Coast Guard again

I’m not sure what the protocol is with neither of their names being on the Tow Boat U.S. memebership, but couldn’t they have still come and tow them in and just charge them for the service? I understand they’re running a business but it seems kind of crappy to just leave them for the CG to deal with.

Good on you for sticking around all day to ensure their safety!

Unconscionable that someone would head out that far without a functioning VHF (really, at that distance from shore, they should have also had a hand-held back-up).

I don’t understanding getting a new boat (to you) and the first place you go is far offshore. You really need to put some hours on the boat nearshore to give you time to learn the boat. How many times have we seen it when a someone gets in trouble with a recently purchased boat and they immediately run it to the reefs.

Semperfish, I hope you loaded the boat with fish. Good thing you were nearby.

Semperfish, Well done for supporting the vessel and staying on scene for the time you did.

As charleston becomes more and more crowded with people from places with no ocean, we will see more and more of this. Social media picture frenzy and the overly confident yet ignorant mindset of too many people these days guarantees more and more situations like this. The boat ramps, creeks, harbors and etc will become a zoo here over the next 10 yrs. Everyone wants to be a hero on day 1 rather than putting one foot in front of the other.

Semperfish, theUSCG isn’t a towing service. I would be shocked if that boat was towed in by them.

The USCG will only tow if you are in distress----- By their definition

What are those first two fish? Some sort of jack?

That trigger and scamp look yummy.

God bless the “ignore” function.
