Strange event on Sullivan's island 8/14

Fished station 16 on Sullivan’s island Friday morning last half hour of incoming and about two hours or so out going. Caught about a 6-8 inch whiting and put it on a hook live. After about a half hour in the surf the reel starts screaming line flying off I grab the rod and let whatever is on the other end continue to run line all of a sudden it stops so I start to reel and nothing on the other end, it’s gone so I reel in and the odd thing is bait is still live and untouched but my pyramid sinker is gone. Something bit through my 50 pound mono lead so obviously something had my sinker and was running with it. Anyone else ever experienced this, or have any idea what could have happened? Maybe something tangled in my line? Any comments or ideas would be great. Thanks

Was it a new shiny new sinker? If it was I’d bet a frisky shark came along, saw something flashy on the bottom, and figured he was getting a free meal.

I’ve had whiting get eaten and spit out before, and they come back alive and apparently untouched, but it’s weird that your weight was gone.

I had one shrimp left on a double drop rig once. I cast it out, got a bite and reeled it in. It was a shark, but it was on the empty hook. They go for pretty much anything. I think you could catch a shark with a fork if you wanted to.
