Strangest Thing You've Hooked/Snagged?

What’s the strangest thing you’ve hooked or snagged while fishing?

I’ve accidentally caught a few pelicans who thought it would be a good idea to steal my bait.

A few years ago my buddy hooked up with something in the harbor. At first he thought he was hung up on something. He pulled up hard, and it took off on a run. This happened over and over. After about thirty minutes of fighting with it, we got it to the surface. It was a huge cast net. Every time we lifted it off the bottom, it would catch the current and take off on a “run” making us think it was a fish. We had a good laugh once we figured out that we had been fooled. We put it in a bucket and took it home.

I caught a sea turtle off the west coast of Florida. We were fishing under floats with live bait and he kept stealing our bait. Even after turning him loose Which was fun), he went right back to bait stealing. We pulled anchor and moved.

Great Blue Heron on the cooper river. Got too close with a florida rigged zoom lizard and the line wrapped around one of his legs when I tried to snatch it back. He took off and spooled my baitcaster. I could not turn him or even slow it down. I tried to pop the line, but it popped at the spool and off he flew with 150yds of 17lb mono. That sucked real bad.

Also hooked an osprey once, he attacked a big shad colored zara spook. I never saw him coming and he came from straight up. I snatched it at the last second and hooked him under the wing. He never flew off and I had to reel him to the boat before it drowned and threw my coat over it. With the help of my dad, we pulled the hook out and released it and it flew away. That one really sucked!!!

7’ gator, okeechobee circa 87. buzzbait extra slow.

Caught an atlantic guitarfish at North Folly. Was around 24-30" long or so, which isn’t very heavy, maybe a couple pounds. Strange creature.

When I was a kid fishing the Catawba river, I hooked a “catfish” that fought me for several minutes. I was reeling it in against the current, and it would “swim” toward the bank for a while, and then away from the bank, then toward it, then away from it.

It turned out to be half a red plastic Dixie cup. It was working the current sorta like a long-nosed crankbait. My dad laughed at me rather shamefully lol.

I hooked a plastic grocery bag in the surf, puffed out like a parachute. Fought it for 5 or10 mins. It was in the fall, thought it may have been a nice Red, tide was dropping and ripping. Pulled drag. Quite convincing. But it was funny huh?

Birds, dogs, etc…

any pigs, ???

You guys catch cr/p that I am not necessarily proud of catching on a fish hook.

I caught a marmoset on a hook last week.

Kidding, of course.

Hooked a sea gull once! Had to laugh as it was flying around kind of like a kids kite! The fun stopped when I reeled it in to unhook it! Those are some nasty birds:smiley:

Hooked a small Candian White Neck in the surf once, must have weighed 145-155lbs. I though it was gonna be a nice fight, but he seem to give up quickly. After a few minute of pulling, finally got him in. Not as feisty as the Ohioans, and not a trophy at all, but it was a catch. They make a weird sound though…wheresmyboardaye…whersemyboard. I threw the skinny thing back!

A refrigerator, Hooked the coils on the back of it. Clients fought it for over 30 minutes.

Down in Cedar Key a couple years ago, I felt something on the line and figured I had picked up a small chunk of oyster shell when I cast a little too far towards the bank. Turns out it was a 4" TR (saltwater catfish)on a topwater Spook. The TR was the same size as the lure, so I give him credit for his boldness.

I caught this a few years back.

The last two times I was fishing I got an oyster catcher and a pelican fouled up in my line. The oyster catcher I actually reeled in and had to untangle…at first he wasn’t cooperative, but eventually he just sat there. The pelican I reeled in (couldn’t believe he didn’t break the line) but it (fortunately) managed to get itself untangled right as a got it to the dock

We were throwing topwater plugs for stripers in the Saluda River years ago. It was just turning dark when an owl lauched off a branch and swooped down and picked up a large popper with 3 treble hooks on it. We thought about cutting the line, but it was obvious he was mangled up in it pretty good and wouldn’t have had a chance. We slowly pulled him toward us as we tried to get closer, but between the running current and him flopping around he didn’t survive.

Felt like ****, but after seeing those talons up close and personal, I don’t think there was much we could have done even if we would have got to him quicker.

Back in the early 80’s we hooked a waterlogged bale of weed on a 30 lb. trolling rod. That thing put up a heck of fight for awhile

side snagged a shark in the middle of the cobia fleet on the Broad River rip. Fought it for 45 min. When we finally boated it, caught a lot of grief from many watchers…

Caught a 42" Northern pike on a piece of hot dog.

Tried everything I had to get a big large mouths attention in clear water… nothing worked. Made several attempts with a large treble hook, ended up with a 12 pound bass and one happy Grandmother while she cooked it. I was 8 years old.

Not strange to some old timers… Many red fin pike on a piece of white cotton cloth.
